Um are the bushes supposed to be separate or are they supposed to gorow together? If not than how do I go about trimmin the little devils up?

I included a pic of other similar shrubs that are separate... are they the same?

I really should have taken a horticulture class at my career school and not the Marketing one like I am.

Trim them up individually and make sure that you don't trim very much between each one. JMO
