View Full Version : Shorting Across Selenoid To Start

Our Sentar (17hp Kaw)wouldin't start - we had voltage to the solenoid and I could tap on the solenoid and it would pick. Is there any downside of temporarily shorting voltage straight to the starter--meaning the old screw driver across the two solenoid terminals? We obviously are going to get a replacement solenoid as quick as possible but plan to use the unit tomorrow.
The only side effect that I can think of is arc burn to the screwdrive, the wire and or terminals.

It always seems like I pull the screwdriver off pretty darn fast when it makes the big spark so I am not holding power on very long.
What ever works. Just be care full I have seen a screw driver weld itself to the solenoid. That was on a 24 volt system though. Hope it works out.
