Problem with Peerless 205 hydrostatic

I have a Victa 4216HX (rebadged Murray) with a Peerless 205-024C transaxle.

I reversed,then went forward and had the motor stall with clouds of smoke from the drive belt.
I can still reverse but forward gives loud noises and vibration.

After removing the belt I found that I can turn the transmission pulley when holding the pedal in reverse but when held in forward the input shaft starts to bind after one or two turns. It is a gradual but quick tightening. It does not feel like it jams on a broken part, just binds up.

I have searched for an internal view online but cannot find anything.

Can you suggest what the problem might be?

Time for a new trans. Tecumseh does not provide much of any service info on that unit or any parts diagrams for the internal components. Only external parts. When the internals stop working, you need a new one.

The new replacment is a Kit that converts from the VST that you have to an LTH. That lists for around $570. Probably time to think about a new tractor.
