6.2 won't start

a friend of mine with a landscape business was driving his 6.2 deisel (recent rebuild) the other day when it sputtered blew black smoke then ran fine the rest of the way home, When he went to start it the next day it wouldn't start. He pressurised the fuel tank and got fuel at the injectors, but still no start. I open the lines at the injectors and cranked it, no fuel coming out.
Are there any checks or tricks I can do on the injector pump or is it probably history. How hard are they to replace? hard to time? cost?

I would check the low pressure lift pump,it went out in my uncle's 6.2 a few years back.It is mounted on the pass side of the block on the front,down by the crank,it looks just like the old mechanical fuel pumps on the small block chevys.You can pull off the line coming out of the pump-to see if its pumping.crank it over,with a soft rubber line on the pump,into a small can,see if it pumps.You can rig up an electric fuel pump like we did,ours went out in the Blizzard of 96" with 25" of snow on the ground,and temps in the teens.Good luck.
