View Full Version : old kohler problem...coil?

I've got an old Kohler MV18, that needs help...It died on me the other day so I've checked the spark on two new plugs, spark on one but not on the other. Magneto and wires appear OK. The local dealer wants $90 for a new coil...is that too much and is it necessary?
Any help appreciated!

You need the coil. I think it lists for about $105 so $90 is fair.

For my next dumb question....Whats the difference between a starter and a coil?

A coil generates what in the end event is a spark.
The starter is the electric motor that spins your engine for starting.
If it's is a rope pull engine then you would be the starter!

So that's not my problem then is it? It is a battery start. What else then? Battery is 1 year old...should I go back to ignition?

should I go back to ignition?
Looks like you need to buy a new coil and be done with it.

Just to follow up...This engine doesn't have a "coil", a "module" is what it needed.
Accomplishes the same thing, the terminology is what was confusing me.
Thanks for the help.

Like a Solenoid is a "Magnetic Switch" .....You got the idea.
