When I say 'CRISP' that's what I mean.
Looks sucked up and cut off.
Just like the Gunny's buzz-cut.
Crisp just like the cut I get from mine.
Only difference is my tire tracks don't show as much due to the wider tires.
Looks great and looks like you were taking off a fair amount of sticky turf.

Yeah this northern grass this time of year is super moist and deep. The blades of grass in the spring actually hold water inside the blade. That was cut at 2 3/4" just 2 days after we got 3" of rain. I dont think I will be able to get away with that next week. might have to bump it up to our normal 3" to 3 1/4".

Yeah... I do...
Cuts those just as good as the rest.
Have you ever cut any of it that was wicked thick and also had plenty of fescue in it as well... co-ed lawn?
You know how most mowers just make a frightning mess the first pass, that you have to clean up with extra passes.
Well, that is no more for me.
The worst I ever saw it do is I cut one such place right after a rain that had 3 weeks growth. In the worst places it left behind these loose tangle stacks of clippings. No tight clumps, just fluff balls. Unreal.

Well, fescue isn't really a 'southern' turf.
It's a northern turf that can survive here to some degree with enough nursing.
I work in an area where I have sharp changes in altitude and temperature.
And I can tell you the typical southern heat makes our grasses coarser and stiffer.
So they do not stripe as easily.
I can see a difference in turf texture working the area I do.
In the mountains where it is cooler, it thrives better and is a lot softer.
In the most southern low altitude areas it is coarse and more like bristles on a push broom.

Same here, although some of mine are like cabbage. You can definetly tell who get treatments around here. Yesterday was the first day of sun and temps above 35 degrees in weeks. Today....sunny and in the 60's, perfect grass growing weather.

Man, thats beautiful. I wish I had stripe-able turf. My Bermuda (see earlier post) just doesn't cut it. Even if I had a nice mower with a striping kit and an irrigation system in the lawn, I'm not sure I could make it look half as good as that.
Great job.

Yeah that's what sucks around here. These contractors just throw bermuda in these neighborhoods and most of the time it is just thrown in. I've been in high dollar hoods where it's like riding over hills.

Speaking of....Why is it that most of the high prices neighborhoods have fescue around here and the moderate to low have bermuda? Its still the south any way you look at it and fescue is tough to grow.

I know this is perhaps the wrong forum to ask this, but with all your perfection I need some advice. How do you make the stripes just end at the edge of say...someone elses property? I can undertand turning on pavement or the sidewalk, but on a zero turn I either burn the turf or make a half moon. Whats the trick?

You're right, I should have taken the picture after I cleaned up the driveway. I tried to keep the driveway out of the pic, but I goofed. As far as the ruts, the grass was a little damp, but the yard looks better in person.

I could tell it was wet.
I wouldn't call it a "rut" but more so 'tracked down' grass.
It happens with wet turf, soft or limp turf, long overcast/cloudy periods, and any time the turf is real juicy... just loaded inside.
But even the tracking can't be that bad, or the stripe is super good because you can't see the 'away' tracks in the light colored stripes.

If there was one thing I learned about them is that they could make something that looked great in person look horrible when you load it onto the computer.
Lighting can really screw with them, causing the color and focus to be all off.

Well, I think a lot of guys do it for the same reason I have in the past, and the same reason I no longer take digital camera pictures of lawns for here.
See, I had a cheap digital camera at one time. It sucked too, and honestly probably took lower quality pictures than the good picture phones do today. But I liked the little camera and once in a while I'd get a good shot.
I didn't mind to use it because you just pushed a button and got a picture.
Then you plugged it into a simple USB cable and downloaded to the computer.
The pics were like 640x480.
SMALL IN FILE SIZE AND ALREADY PRE-SIZED FOR LAWNSITE.
Well, I killed that thing. Broke it. I got a nice new one to replace it. HUGE images and HUGE file sizes, and way more trouble than it was worth by the time you take the picture, load it on the PC, resize it, and post it. NO THANKS.
I bought another cheap one, with a nice "water case" and all, small images.
I thought cool..... until I took some pictures with it. Very bad quality images and the view finder was misaligned. Like I took some pictures of the fall foliage... ended up with pictures of tree trunks instead.

Teh phone I had at the time had terible quality...however now i have a samsung sync and the quality of pictures are as good as any cheapo digital camera...so why bother spendin the money on a cheapo when I have one right there in my pocket? I can email the images to myself and when I get home in the evenings, just upload the images to my computer and share them with you guys! :)

My wife has been bugging me to make our lawn look like that, not that I think my 1/2 weed 1/2 bahaia sod can look like that.
My idea of hire someone to do the yard didn't go over well for right now.
Check out this site: http://www.scag.com/lawnstriping.html
It is tough to stripe most southern grasses, but from what I hear, it can be done. So far on LS i've seen st.augustine, zoysia, and centipede grass striped, but bahaia ,with it's tough structure might be hard to lay down and in turn, make stripes. Good luck.
Thanks.
Once I get the irrigation installed, we have only owned this house for 2 years, I plan on putting down st.augustine.

What striping kit are you using for your turboforce? I have looked at the toro striping rollers, they are just rediculous exspensive. If that is what you use I think that I will bite the bullet and buy one....Looks great!!!!!

No Striping kit?!?! I envy cool season grasses....The toro dealers sell both. The striping kit is around $300, and the blocker is ~$250...A little exspensive, but think they will be worth it.

yeah i agree. i hate shooting grass into my customers beds, and the extra definition the striping roller gives is deffinetley worth it.

Awesome pics, with stripes like those i would have thought that you could easily sell the owner on some checker board pattern. Show them one week then let them know it's only an extra___$ per week. Just a thought.

Thanks Harley, well considering the fact that I am the owner of said property, I've already sold myself on that pattern :)
If you look, some of the pics go across my back yard toward the patio. The last couple are shot looking down my yard perpendicular to the others. If I shot a pic of it from an angle you would see the design. I alternate cuts every cut which now is about every other day to keep up with the growth. If you do a search on some of my posts from the past years you can see some other designs.

when he says "blocker" hes refering to an operator controlled discharge chute, you can close it down so you dont shoot grass in your customers mulch. also ive looked at big league lawns striping kits and they are very expensive, i think im going to build something myself.

I got a few thou the two lawns aren't in the greatest shape due to various reasons, the stripes did turn out...

Here are a few of mine....will post more as the week goes along. I am loving life right now because all of my lawns are looking GREAT.....and the strips are even starting to show in the bermuda. The first pics are from a house we have on a golf course in West Atlanta. We have picked up so many accounts from guys teeing off. Yeah I really hate the guy next door. Between him and the half asses that he has cut his lawn from time to time, they are killing me. He told me it was no way he would pay $65 bucks a week for service. His people charge $35....:nono: ..... Lucky my customers realize the difference, and realize what they are paying for and the service they are getting. The course usually looks better then this also, dont know whats up with them.

speaking of chem lawns.... about 75% of my customers have them. But that doesn't mean the cut is perfect every time. You have to have a good mower, and trust me, a striping roller makes a world of the difference. Mauler, those stripes look good for the turf you are cutting on, no one should bash you for them, and btw do you use side discharge or mulch? looks good keep it up.

Of course; when you mow in high profile neighborhoods, or maintain commercial properties that people drive by everyday, you do want to have nice stripes, it sets you apart from the competition and definitely makes your lawns look more professionally done. And really, if your going to spend 10k on a mower why not pay 300 more for a striping roller that will make your yards look so much better; i couldn't agree with you more.

I am hoping some stripers can shed some light on the following questions;
I use a 33" walk behind with 3 blades.
1) I currently have the side discharge closed with the mulch attachment/door. Will I get better striping if I use the side discharge instead?
2) should the front wheels be set higher or lower than the rear. I have heard 1/2" lower
3) do I need a striping kit to get stripes??? I am in the process of trying to make one. Anyone have any good plans for making a 30" (used on 33" mower) striper?

Hey kreft can you post some pics when that same property is covered in snow this winter. We don't see much snow down south so I think it would be a nice site to see. Nice property btw.:clapping:

Hell, to me it's to the point I'm impressed by seeing just grass that is GREEN.
Nice job.
Sometime in the future I may want to borrow this picture when we are discussing ZTR's...

Damn! nice stripes. Thank god all of my lawns are back to green. Why would you need that pic to discuss ztr's. That could be easily done with a ztr rider. I've dont hill much worse than that.

Thanks. Funny thing, the first two pics, that's the same yard front and back. The guy takes great care of it, dethatches and aerates every year, has Truegreen(I know I know, but it's better than doing nothing) come out, and that whole lawn was brown as heck at the end of July. It really bounced back well but you'll get that with 16 inches of rain in a month...

Of course not but now I want to know why, and FWIW that was not cut with a Z.

5-0 boy... Great looking stripes. I have a little tip on your picture taking though... wait until the next day to take the pics and it won't show any wheel marks. But again, sweet stripes!

Well, several times over I have tried to explain in text about areas where you are cutting a double angle area.
Like you are cutting something that is sloped right to left and also front to back at the same time.
A ditch line running downhill is a good example.
Most ZTR's will perform fair cutting a ditch angle (right to left) like that going up the ditchline towards the top. But most ZTR's also cannot make the return pass back down to save their life. The uphill tire breaks traction on the way back down traveling on an angle.
In that picture of yours, it doesn't look too steep in either direction, but is still a visual example worth more than a thousand words I could type.
Anyways, I'm sure you can imagine areas such as that where it's steeper both ways and there is no other real option in cutting pattern. In the past with other ZTR's I have had such places that I could only cut in one direction. Mow up, then return back to the bottom some other way, then mow up another pass, repeating the process until done.
I have one big area that is like this but much steeper both ways, and also curved too. It's mowed area along a long drive that runs up/down a steep hill and curves some. Off the side of the pavement it also slopes off steeply on both sides and before you reach the bottom of the slope there is a barbed wire fence to catch you if you break loose.
Previous ZTR's would not hold it going down, and given the nature of ZTR's... they wanted to go straight for the barbed wire fence. No thanks.
I used to have to mow this area with a lawn tractor, which payed it no attention at all. It was faster to do it with something with a steering wheel than it was to cut it all in one direction (up) and drive a dead run back down on the pavement to the bottom to make the next pass.
The Ztwo is the only one I have personally used that can handle this one.

I think that's stretching what you can call stripes.
Look like a bunch of wheel marks to me, and crooked ones at that.

The funny thing is that this is one of the mowers we use to mow vacant lots. I never new it would stripe a lawn so nice as it has no striping kit and we beat the hell out of it. The deck height must be perfect or maybe its the high lift blades?

Never would have guessed that old plugger layed those stripes. That's the best i've seen for a lawn tractor. Nice job.

This is my own hose getting ready to sell a few years ago. I always thought to my eye the big wide stripes on a small lot looked out of place so I use a 22 inch with a weighted roller attached at the back. Been lurking a while...but first post.

Good job.
It's a simple plastic roller about 4 inches in diameter and filled with sand that attaches behind the mower. The company is LawnStriper and they have a website with pictures. I haven't been around long enough to know how people react to links so I'll leave it at that. It really does make nice stripes, although my lawn was probably healthier than most.
I don't have any pictures of it mounted because the new place was just seeded a few weeks ago. I haven't had a lawn to cut for over a year so it (the roller, not the mower) is up in the garage attic space. I actually came here to get the pro's impressions of different zero turns since the new place is 2 acres. I do not own a landscape business so I am primarily just searching, reading and getting more confused with every thread I read.
