View Full Version : which Brands of ZTR are the most Popular in your area
08-05-2001, 01:45 AM
I have been wondering this for a while I'm near Branson Mo and Grasshopper is # 1 here.I say the rest is the dixie chopper, scag.walker, Faris. There are no lexmark or hustler or dane dealers here.Whats in your area?
08-05-2001, 01:55 AM
Never seen a Faris or Lexmark 'round these parts neither.
08-05-2001, 01:57 AM
Around here it's Dixie Chopper, Exmark, and Toro in ZTR's.
I have never seen a JD ZTR mowing and I only know of one crew with Scags and they are driving 50 miles one way to the job. :)
I don't expect to see them next season, after this dry summer we are having. All their equipment and the truck looks new and their work shows it.
08-05-2001, 02:34 AM
Here in Germany its definetly Walker and Hustler. Never seen anything else here for that matter.
Back home it was the Lazer Z
Hope this helps!
08-05-2001, 02:42 AM
In no particular order:
08-05-2001, 04:08 AM
I'm sure if craftsman made one it would be #1 here!
but seriously it would have to be toro, scag, walker,in that order
08-05-2001, 04:56 AM
Toro, Exmark, Gravely, Scag
08-05-2001, 08:08 AM
08-05-2001, 10:25 AM
Walker and Exmark
08-05-2001, 10:33 AM
Walker Dixie Chopper and Bobcat here
08-05-2001, 10:54 AM
Scag, then eXmark. They're pretty equal I think. Scag is made about 30 minutes from here. I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not. There are also the Grasshoppers and Bobcats runnin' around also. Haven't seen any Hustler's or DC's either.A few Ferris and Toro's. Scag and eXmark really have the strangle hold around here though.
08-05-2001, 11:19 AM
Bobcat,by far,then Exmark/Toro,and Dixie
08-05-2001, 11:40 AM
We see mostly walkers, exmarks, and grasshoppers.
Far more Exmarks machines around here (especially the ZTR's).
The other brands seem to be about equally mixed.
Er,..unless you are counting the Crapsman's, Murrey's, and Yard Machines that are in the back of every other pick-up truck. :(
08-05-2001, 02:44 PM
50 Exmarks to 1 of every thing else
08-05-2001, 02:50 PM
Choppers and Axemarks mainly. I'm the only one in town with a Scag. Have seen a new guy with a Walker and the usual mix of Crapsman etc...........
I did see a pushmower strapped to the roof of a car and one in the hatchback as well, didn't get to see the brands of these.
08-05-2001, 02:55 PM
Here in Montgomery, Walker mainly then Scag, Exmark, Toro and a few Dixons.
08-05-2001, 02:56 PM
Walker and Scags and Exmark.

And to add on that..... thats what I see on the local economy. From the couple of bases overseas I've been stationed at, the equipment we use on base is either hustler or toro (usually a mix of both) Smaller hustlers and some larger groundsmasters.
08-05-2001, 03:25 PM
no dixie choppers or ferris mowers around here.
08-05-2001, 04:12 PM
Exmark is the mower you see the most here. After that it's Gravely. I have the only DC in sight (the closest dealer is 40+ miles away).
Walker, Scag, Exmark in that order. It is amazing how many Walkers there are being used out there, but in the Lawnsite group they are quite a minority. Any thoughts on that.
08-05-2001, 04:35 PM
JLC, it's just like farm tractors. When I was growing up in S. Dakota, that was International Harvester country, but we had Case tractors. If you went down to Kansas, it was all Case. Another area will be all John Deere. I think this and lawn mower sales all depends on availability and dealer support for what part of the country you are in.
Most dealers around here and usually all over the USA, do not sell just one brand and I don't blame them. I would think it is hard for a Mfg to get a dealer already selling several brands to sell another one, so it has to be hard for smaller Mfg to get their products out to the public. The internet will make this all change though and already has made a big change for a lot of us Lawnsite members. :)
08-05-2001, 06:52 PM
Here in Western NC, the trend is Exmark , Toro, Great Dane, Husky, but there are far more walk behinds than ZTR's
Here in Springfield ,Missouri it's almost all DixieChopper, only 40 miles from you John and i've only seen one Grasshopper here.
08-05-2001, 07:19 PM
Ferris, then exmark. you do see walker abit.
seems like ztr's aren't as popular here as out front, three wheel mowers, or WB's
08-05-2001, 07:37 PM
1% Everything Else
08-05-2001, 08:13 PM
I would have to agree with SLS in the Nashville area. There are far more Exmarks than anything else. Haven't seen any Lexmarks though.
Exmark takes the majority here, toro shows up now and again....with husqvarna taking a tie for third with kubota. You see a few deeres running away from the exmarks, but that has been known to happen.
08-05-2001, 09:17 PM
The only machines I have not seen are Woods and White, and I've only seen the Woods at last year's Expo, and White was mentioned on this site.
There is a large Toro dealer here, so they are #1, with DC, Exmark and Walker battling for 2d. I run a Husky.
08-05-2001, 10:47 PM
Grasshopper, Ferris, Woods, Kees, John Deere. Only one DC here, :) and that's mine. Everyone else here is trying to copy my stripes.
08-05-2001, 10:58 PM
Well I see (in the following order) Scag (seems like every trailer I see has 1 or more), Exmark/Toro, then a small mix of Wright and Great Dane then what ever is left. Only a couple of Dixie Chopper. And of course if you dont own a crapsman, then your not in the lawn business! LOL!
08-06-2001, 02:16 AM
John deere, Toro, Great Dane\
I use a walker and hustler and there starting to sell more
because people see what real quality is compared
to 425 JD> JD is big for riders but they are
starting to lose it now because the service
is bad at the dealers.
08-06-2001, 02:28 AM
In this order, with 4 being an equal mix of those older machines.
08-06-2001, 02:35 AM
Here in Indiana it's pretty much all Dixie Choppers. You do see a few Scags, Grasshoppers and Snappers around plus a few Lasers and Buntons every once in awhile.
Here in southern In 85% Scag, then Toro and Exmark, Its hard to see a trailer around here without seeing scags of some-sort. Even the Toro and Exmark dealers say its tuff to compete with the scags in this area. Marks Mowing Service
08-06-2001, 12:56 PM
Here in Southeastern Wisconsin the majority of ZTRS i see on trailers and mowing is mostly Scag, some Toro's, Great Danes, A few Bobcats, and some JD Front Deck mowers no JD ZTR's. Have seen a Exmark in the area but it seems they r just starting to get established in this area now, no DC, but some Grasshoppers. But its mostly Scag Country here we have a great dealership in the area which helps alot.
I have a Scag and love it, waiting to see what this new JD ZTR will look like cause i am still a JD fan at heart.
08-06-2001, 01:29 PM
Heres a link to their site:
08-06-2001, 02:40 PM
almost everything here. i cut alot in raleigh N.C.
toro and exmark seems to be the mower for us smaller guys, along with snapper, bobcat, dane, walker, hustler, encore, dixon, etc, etc. i have never seen a ferris though. not many grasshoppers either. oh yeah, scag seems to be on the way out here the local dealer tha i used dropped scag about a year ago. there are bunches and bunches of mowers runnin' around here , it seems that the work here would eventually dry up, but i don't know anybody that is slow here. it amazes me every day to see the amount of people out cutting grass that i see, and i'm still
getting call all the time!!!
b.t.w. i run toro w/b and hustler z rider
08-06-2001, 03:43 PM
I was talking about JD's new ZTR that will be in the showrooms this coming spring, its a joint operation with Great Dane the company that JD bought out, they i guess r going to make a ZTR for JD or work together i mean to build JD's own ZTR, instead of buying one and painting it to look like a JD, im sure they will keep the 7 Iron deck.
Just wanted to let u know
08-06-2001, 04:32 PM
Talk about stuffin my foot in my mouth! - ROFLMAO
I will keep my eyes open at the local dealers here.
Thanks for the "heads-up"!
08-06-2001, 04:38 PM
I wasnt yelling at ya just wanted to make it sound clear and not get confused. Ill keep my eyes open too on that cause right now my scag stripes ok, ive built a home made rubber stripe kit for it and its helping but ive hear the new 7iron deck is great and stripes really good.
08-06-2001, 05:05 PM
In my area we have mainly 3 type of mowers, (1) bobcat (2) Dixie Chopper (3) Grasshopper That is because we have a local dealer for each one. It looks like the Choppers & the Bobcats are replacing the Grasshoppers. That could be because of the Grasshopper dealer, he doesn't have time to talk to you, just wants to know what you want. Went to the Bobcat dealer today, stood around 20 minutes at lunch time and talked about the new mowers for 2002 . I bought a chainsaw from him 2 years ago, he still knows my first name! Going to by a ZTR this winter, really want a chopper, but I'll consider a bobcat. To me, a dealer makes the most difference.
08-06-2001, 05:33 PM
Crapsman, Crappers, and Murry !!
One outfit has a JD665.
There are dealers 30 minutes north that sell Dane, TORO, And GrassHopper.
..about 15 minutes north that sell John Deere, Woods(Discontinued)
... About 20 minutes north, Kubota (Had two new Zs - they're gone now)
..And last, but not least a JD dealer 35 minutes west who sell Dixies!
I've seen one Turf Tiger, and one Bob Cat.
08-06-2001, 05:43 PM
LOOK OUT BILLY!!!!
Im movin to your neighborhood with 6 highly productive eXmark hydro's and skilled technicians. :)
Boy is your area in for a striping frenzy! :D
08-06-2001, 05:49 PM
With the amount of work we have here, your six guys will have worked themselves out of a job in about...
I have a TORO 52" Wb with striping kit, so I can stripe - but not the straightest! :D
08-07-2001, 12:20 AM
Welcome John! It is good to see someone that is close.Im down in Harrison Ar.
We Have the following in use by local LCOs
3 Great Danes
3 grass hoppers 2 bought in the last 2 months
by people who mow localy but live somwhere else
Those are the Z machines I have seen in the last few months.
There are plenty of home owner grade machines out there and severl JDs.
08-07-2001, 12:30 AM
Scag is #1 here, as in most popular. After that it is a combination of every mower you have ever seen in your entire life! The ones I catch myself staring at are the Grasshoppers and the Dixie Choppers.
08-07-2001, 02:58 AM
Exmark then all the rest!!!!!!!!!!!!!
08-09-2001, 10:26 PM
around houston its scag, kubota, grasshopper, toro, and john deer. bought grasshopper myself best bang for the bucks.
08-10-2001, 12:31 AM
Around here it's scagg everywhere. See alot of POS's too.
08-10-2001, 12:42 AM
in order from most popular to least:
scag (all hail the 72" sabre tooth turbo diesel)
08-10-2001, 12:51 AM
around philadelphia and sur. counties exmark/toro, scagg, dixichoppers, kubotas, my favored hahaha ferris, grashoppers, gravelys great danes we got them all
East of Pittsburgh it's all Walkers. Too bad I didn't get one a long time ago, I'd have a lot more accounts. Everybody in those Walkerless areas junk your walk behind get a walker and rake in the profit.
08-10-2001, 01:49 AM
Toro-Walker-Ferris-Exmark-JD lawn tractors
Never seen a Grasshopper-Dane-Hustler-or a DC, but I'm in the city. Anyone in Ontario know if Hustler is avail. anywhere?
08-10-2001, 12:56 PM
I believe alpine in scar. has hustlers.
Walker in markham has d-choppers, so they are here

I live in SPRINGFIELD MO. and about the only mower that dominates this area is the DIXIE CHOPPER. However we test drove a new local manufacturer called a BLADERUNNER which is the talk of town and after a test drive I am convinced that this will be the mower of the future in lawn care industry!
08-17-2001, 12:17 AM
On ZTRs its Exmark, Toro, Scag, Gravely, then scattered with the other brands. I haven't seen any Hustlers or Great Danes around here.
08-17-2001, 12:24 AM
Welcome to Lawnstie. I see you have 2 posts and both are about this Bladerunner. How can you tell so much about a mower from a test drive in Louisville? I heard there wasnt any grass to mow there. How do you know they will hold up since they are new on the market and this was their first showing down there? Several of the members here were down there and they didn't come back as impressed as you did. Do they have a website?
08-21-2001, 09:24 AM
I did not drive this machine at the expo. I drove it on one of my accounts, The manufacture of the bladerunner is here in springfield in my town. As far as durability it's been tested for 5 years according to the owner, and if you look at the machine up close you will see that it has almost nothing on it that would break under normal use. What really impressed me is how simple the machine is similar to my d/c mowers!

08-31-2001, 09:10 PM
I see alot of exmarks, john deere, and bobcats. But look out dixie choppers are beginning to appear quite often.:)
I'd have to say Scag, Exmark, Toro, Ferris and Dixie Chopper.(in that order) With a few others mixed in too.
And by the way up here in Saint Charles/Saint Louis area, there are reputable dealers of all of the above brands, Johnhenry. I know thats probably way to far for you to go, but there all here anyway.
09-01-2001, 01:34 AM
It's about 95% Exmark around here. We have a dealer who is awesome!!! We have a few Scags, Toro's, Gravley's and a couple of Dixie's :) ;) :) ED
09-01-2001, 02:12 AM
Up until this year it was Toro and Walker. Since I got mine (very few then), I am seeing lots of eXmarks on trailers these days. Starting to see many more of them over Toros in the Z's.
