I recently had my deck idler pulley go out. Bearing locked up and burned the pulley up. When I took the pulley into the dealer he said they are replacing them left and right. Actually had the part under his counter. I replaced that two weeks ago. Last week my pulley on the spindle wore through all the teeth. Been waiting for almost a week for the new part. Think it is related to the deck idler pulley going out?

What model mower do you have?
When did you buy it?
How many hours are on it?
Commercial or residential use?
I need some information so I can look into this for you.

I go through them like crazy on a old super Z, and and XR7. I just keep spares around because they go so often.

I am hearing more on LawnSite about people having problems with idler pulleys going out. What does Hustler know about this and is there anything being done such as a heavier bearing pulley? I am also hearing about some hydro problems after 200 hrs. on the Super Z's, is there a problem Hustler is familiar with?

We updated the bearing in the deck idlers (Z and Super Z) a year ago, if your having a problem with them make sure your dealer is aware of it.

There is no common problem at any certain hour interval.

Did Hustler have a issue with any of the hydraulic components they were using, if so did they change any brands of components because of this.
The people I am hearing talk about the hydro problems, is this one of those deals where one out of a thousand goes bad and that is all you hear about or is it one in a hundred and there could be a cause?

I have also gone through 2 idler pulleys on a 2 year old 52 Fastrak with 70 hours. The bad part was that it was only covered under warranty if the dealer did the repair.

Me too. I keep spares handly. The only fault I can find with my Hustler Z is those idler pulleys. They are generic. Hustler did not design them, they are off the shelf.
I hope my new Exmark has better idlers.
kenny.

If your idler bearing goes out you will know, it will make some noise and the pulley will loosen up on the bolt it is mounted to.
Like I had mentioned earlier, the bearing design has changed (actually a couple times), the new bearing is a double roller and I am not aware of any issues with them.
You do have to realize that the parts stock in dealers and distributors may of still had some of the older versions of this pulley.

PjIf they were known to be faulty, they should have been pulled from stock and returned to the manufacture for full refund to Hustler.

hustler z, 60" deck...380 hours, and i have replaced 2 idler deck pullys, the clutch went bad becuse the bearing in that went bad today, and now i feel a front wheel spindle bearing is going bad. i think i bought a yellow ( lemon ) that sat too long before i owned it. it was a holdover from the year before.

The purchase date I show in our system is 6/15/05, is this correct? if so your still in your warranty period and this should be covered under warranty.
Who are you using for a dealer now?

Sorry for the slow response. This is a home use only mower. I have had it exactly 1 year and mow 1 maybe 2 times a week in the summer. Mower has maybe 50 to 75 hours on it. It's a hustler 42" Mini Z with the Kohler 17 Command. I got my new pulleys on and the mower is mowing like a charm again.

I bought the clutch from ECK :dizzy: on monday. FYI When i told him the issues i had he told me it was becuse i did not purchase the super z with the new deck.. I told him that it was not being made at the time i bought my mower. It is always strange to me how I seem to know more about the products I purchase than the dealer selling them, but i guess becuse its my money, thats the way it is. (was that way at carls too)
