Here are some pics of attachments I have made for my Steiners. I hate painting so nothing ever gets painted. That way it always looks like you just made it.
Blade for doing topsoil, gravel or anything. I have a 10' angle iron that also hooks onto it to level large areas.

Trailer hitch and 3' lifting pole.

My 6' magnet hangs off this frame. It also pulls my chain link mat and the 10' levelling bar.

This is my sidewalk snow blade.

Bulldozer blade. It will push almost anything.

Aerator. I can do two passes in a hurry to pull enough plugs. Haven't made a cent off it. No one wants it done.

Pallet forks. I can move part skids of pavers with it. I also move firewood with it.

Stone fork. I wish I made it to dump, maybe next time.

Crowsfoot packer/crumbler. I use this on really hard soil. It's heavy as all heck. Too cheap to pay me to pick stones before seeding and I will bury them with this. Until next spring and the frost heaves them again.

5' and 6' decks.

My seeder. I can still use it on my 3 point hitch. It also mounts to the front of my John Deere mower.

Our old Steiner with the fertilizer spreader on it. I also have a front mount sprayer but too lazy to hook it up yet.

Rake/ dethatcher I made today. This is 3 passes on my dirt path into my hayfield. I thinks it's going to work great for grub damage. It also lossens up stones. I even did a gravel driveway with it. Tines are quick and cheap to replace.

I have a few more things I want to build yet but just need to find the time to do them. I have other attachments for the rear. Lawn roller, spiker, trailers, etc.

We also have a steiner, but have issues with a hydraulic leak on the front end, any ideas how to fix it??:canadaflag: :canadaflag:

cantoo

Steiners are like Harleys. If they don't leak oil then they are empty.

Depends where the leak is. Might be a pinhole in a hose or a seal on a cylinder. Most leaks are easy to fix it's finding them that is hard. Everything is so tight it's almost impossible to fix anything without disassembling alot.

You have a good imagination and a talent for equipment design.
I'm looking forward to see what you come up with next.

Here's my storage shop. http://www.lawnsite.com/showthread.php?t=184416
I did buy a new mig this year but already have most other tools I need.

I buy my Steiners used so the prices are reasonable. I paid around $3500 for my older one and about $7000 for my newer diesel with 600 hrs on it. I bought and sold a Ransomes one (same as Steiner but green) New price at the dealer is around Can$15000 depending on engine options.
Todays sale had an older one with Onan gas and 1400 hrs with 5' deck and it sold for $6000 before taxes way to much for me. I need one more to mount my sprayer on so I don't have to switch machines. It only takes a few minutes to change but my wife does most of the work so it easier to have lore machines.
Eric, I have no idea how many attachments I have. I would have to go look around. I have 10 acres and crap everywhere. I have 50 projects on the go at all times. Plus I am addicted to auction sales so spare time is hard to find. I make my wife stay home on weekends to sell stuff to people. Today she sold 4 tires that I paid $40 for and got $300. It paid for my day at the sale and I bought 4 more tires and a table saw. $75.00 Mowers were too pricy today. Had a guy look at the JD front mount I think he'll be back for it.

To Jason U (post #18) - make sure the vent on the front axle is closed. It's easy to knock it open because it's spring loaded, and not many people know it's there to help drain the oil when you're changing it. I'm on my 14th Steiner.

Thanks for the info, my steiner sat idle for most of the summer last season because I focused on other equipment, but then spent some time this winter fixing it, and if this snow ever re-melts - the steiner will be the first piece of equipment out of the shop door!!!

I love seeing what comes out of Canadians' shops. I get the RFDTV channel on Dish Network and I really like the Prairie Farm Report show. They basically tour shops and show custom built equipment Canadian farmers build during the winter. There has been some really neat stuff on there, like a wide-boom sprayer built on a combine harvester frame.

very nice fab work on the tool's. I only have two questions. Does it float and can i put a gun on it?

cantoo
04-27-2008, 01:18 AM
larrylawn, 2 answers. 1. No, it don't float, son buried it in the bush swamp last year and we had to clear a 200' path to get the big tractor in to get it out.
2. You can put a gun on anything.
No time building attachments lately, Been working on the toy hauler and lots of other stuff. The Steiners have seen lots of use already this year. Broom for parking lots, blade to move snow and the other blade for moving gravel off lawns. 2 weeks fertilizing and lawn rolling done already. We've decided to buy another newer one to replace our old one. It's auction sale season so I should have another one soon.

Love the attachments you have for your steiners! Hopefully you or someone else can help me with a few questions. I have a 1979 s-16 traction master that was refurbed a few years back with an 18 hp B & S twin cylinder engine. I currently only have two attachments for the steiner a core aerator and a a 48 inch dozer blade.

I have been told by dealers that I cannot run the following attachments with my 18 hp but I could with atleast a 20 hp. I think they are just trying to get me to buy a higher hp steiner.

1- stump grinder
2- anything bigger than a 48 inch mowing deck
3-slip scoop
4- 2 stage snowblower
5- tiller attachment

Thank you to all that read and have any input!

My friend has a green one with 8 wheels and a gas Kubota engine on it. Its mainly just used for mowing. He has a tree lift and 3 mowing decks as well.
Oh and its got probably close to 7 thousand hrs on it and runs great.

Judd12, the Kohler 16 hp single cylinder was unstoppable but the BS twin 18 was/is definitely stoppable. I agree with the attachments listed. The 16 was the first one I bought, then I burned through BS 18 & 20, then they put in an Onan twin 20 that brought back the good days. I just picked up a 525 with the Kubota 21 hp diesel that'll do me until I find one with the Kubota 28. If you want to see something really awesome, look for a Steiner TurfMaster, a mini Uke truck. Unfortunately I can't step up that high anymore. The water cooled engines last a lot longer than the air cooled ones.

thanks for the reply! Thats interesting that the 16 hp was a better performer than my 18 hp briggs. The local steiner dealer says if I wanted to put in an onan it would be major alterations to the S-16 ($3k plus). I got the steiner for a deal ($500). When you say that you agree with the attachments listed, you mean that they wouldn't work?

I would love to have an old onan ( i heard they don't make them anymore) or even better a kubota gas or diesel but, I really want to get the most out of this steiner. I have seen the turfmaster that you speak of, you being a steiner fan would love to check out mast-leply in apple creek, ohio. They are the biggest steiner dealer in the world and have the most amazing steiner inventory you could dream up. They had the earlier turfmaster and the newer version, the 428 there!

Thanks again for the great info!

There is no replacement for displacement! That big single cylinder and heavy flywheel just kept luggin' on, like the old Johnny Popper John Deeres, and I'd run out of traction before out of power. On the other hand, if it happened to shut off at top dead center and then sat for several days in below freezing weather, I had to turn the crankshaft with a long pipe wrench before the starter would move it. But the BS engines didn't have the torque, so the tiller only worked well in a long-established garden. Since it's a hydrostat, in low range you can run any attachment, but at a crawl. That's why they made both 44" and 48" slip scoops. You can still find Onan/Linamar engines, but it's cheaper to just find a used 420 or 430, even if it needs a new engine.

I had one of the first Turfmasters, way back in the early 80s. I had two, in fact, because the first one developed a crack in an axle housing in a couple of weeks. Then many hoses on the second were rubbing through in a couple of months and they gave me a 420 to replace it. It took them another decade before they rereleased it. Another problem was heat due to the engine placement, but the water-cooled versions are better.

And now you know why I have this username, even if I only use one "r".

1. Cantoo nice fab work, very creative! I hate prepping and painting my welding projects so most of my welding projects end up unpainted too, plus I never have to worry about scratching the paint:). I stumbled on steiners a couple years ago on ebay but I only saw the dozer blade and the mower, I never knew they were so versatile. 2. Is the 430 max the only model that steiner currently sells???? Because on their website that is the only model I could find info on, maybe I just missed the link to their other models.

2brothers, if you're referring to me, I've done a wide variety in the past 60 years, including assisting at brain surgery as a graduate student. Anybody want to buy 80 acres of cropland/pasture & 70 acres of woods? I'm retired, which means, as some of you have found out when you tried to quit, I only work 12/7 these days.

Jacobsen sold Steiner just before the crash. The new owner went back to the core product, so the 430 is the only thing they make.

Cantoo - love your welding. You are an artist for sure. I have a Ventrac with an old Steiner blade I use to push snow. bothe the pins that hold it on came off - also have a slip scoop so I was able to finish all the snow jobs.
Anyway any hints on getting those rewelded so this does not happen again. I was pushing and then backing up over and over and the just sheered off?? Maybe sheered is a hard word cause they left the holes where the where so pulled out? This tractor sure does move the snow - very happy with it but, since I don't weld it's a bummer. so i'm talking about the pins that stick out and the c hooks go over it to hold the blade on. I have a welder and all the stuff (mask, rods, etc) never used it but time to learn. Do I just stick the little rod that fell out into the hole and weld the back side and around front - any tips>

I also use the slip scoop for lots of mulch moving great unit for that too.

Barefoot james, not sure if you got it fixed or not, I don't hang around here much anymore. I got hooked on the firewood thing and spend my days at the Arboristsite now. And to make things worse I screwed up and sold all of my steiner tractor units. I thought I priced them high and damn thay all sold. I'm still looking for more units though, I have all my attachements yet. As for the pins, I make my own brackets and I just drill a little bigger size hole than the pin, put the pin in the hole and then crank up some high heat and weld from the backside, grind smooth if you want. You need the heat and space for penetration.

I just ordered a new Steiner 430 with 30 hp kohler with 3 pt. hitch, duel tires, 72" mowing deck, slip scoop. This will be my first unit, from guys that own steiner, ventrac what are some ins and outs on the machine? I will be using it for mowing and landscaping duties and maybe doing little snow removal. I have had lots of differnt zrt, walkbehind mowers and wanted a machine that could help the scag walkbehind on slopes i mow and stop some rutting issues with walkbehind on slopes. Plus i have a farm that i have endless things i can do with it when not using it for business work projects.
