I have a 95 toro proline i bought used and I have a few problems I need some help with first off the blade engagment is electric on the dash near ignition when the button is pushed nothing happens is this a relay or bad switch? Also the battery dies after running the mower for some time like it is not being recharged they do have a alternator type system dont they? What do I do to fix this?

I'm not sure because you didn't post model numbers but I don't believe there is a relay on this unit ? I would suggest checking for battery voltage going into the switch with a test light or multimeter, If there is voltage check at the plug near the clutch.

This thread should cover the charging system problem.

model number 30181 its a 95 toro proline midsize walkbehind would the not charging and the not being able to engage the blades be stemming from the same culprit?

They will only if you run the unit long enough to drain the battery low enough to kick the pto clutch off.

In other words, The pto clutch actually runs off the battery while the charging system puts the voltage drawn by the clutch back in the battery.

If you charge the battery back up and without starting the engine but only put the key in the run position then turn the pto clutch on you should here it click in. If it does go ahead with the charging system testing. If you hear no click then (as I see now with model #'s) it does have a safety switch module and relay with a switch on the bail so it could be any of these or the switch it's self.
Once the pto clutch engagment problem is solved then move on to the charging system testing.
