These are growing "wild" in my customer's neighbor's rather unkempt yard. He wants to dig them up and plant them in his yard. Can anyone tell me about them?

Zone 8 to be exact. Most cannas i've seen look different. more orange and green than purple. But i did think that they might be related. LoL. Is this a different cultivar, maybe?

Just a different cultivar - it has a beautiful dark red bloom. The foliage provides nice color even in the absence of a bloom.
