View Full Version : Productivity comparison: 21's vs 36's

I am wanting to know what to expect as far as productivity goes across between the avg 21 and avg 36 wb on 1/6 acre to 1 acre. Of course it will benifit more on the 1 acre than the 1/6 ( cause of more turn arounds per area). However, on avg, what is the diff? Is the avg 36 about twice as fast?
Do the Hydro's go at great speeds and ease than belt driven?

it's going to vary based on the obsticles and how open the lot is but for me it is close to 2x as fast. The drives are faster and for me anyway my quick will cut fine at balls out speed w/o wearing on me like a 21.

I'm new and have what I think is a related question. What would be the advantage of a 36" wb vs a 36" Z turn? Shouldn't a Z mow at a faster speed and tire you out less while retaining the same mobility? At first glance it seems the extra cost of a good Z would be worth it.

some of my properties where easily twice as fast, others , are , well, just alot faster. it all depends an the property.

As others have said, it depends alot on the property. One yard I do, maybe 3000-5000 sq feet grass, my 36" WBH time saves me maybe 8 minutes, on a yard that takes maybe 18 minutes with a 21". Another yard that I do, 15,000 sq feet of grass, 36" mower is about 1/2 the time as the 21", it saves alot of pushing. My 48" Z takes the same time as the 36" WBH becuse I have to take the gate off the hinges to get the Z in the rear yard, big pain ith the butt. The same size Z is usually faster than a WBH and is less tiring, but there is a huge wieght factor, an several people that I cut grass for do not want the weight of the Z on their yard.

I've also been curious about the weight factor. What does an average 48 wb weigh and how wide are the tires? I'm curious about the lbs per sq. in. comparison since most Z's have a tire with a much larger footprint. Could be more of an issue with perception. Anyone with a similar sized deck wb and z that could comment on which leaves the least footprint behind on the lawn?
