View Full Version : How Many Lawns

05-30-2007, 10:29 PM
Hello I just started a lawn care business with a friend of mine. We have really no experience, but everyone loves our work.
My question is this about how many lawns should we be getting done in say a 12 hour day?

All our equipment is brand new
42 rapid height stander
36 bobcat walk behind with the velke wheels
2 echo blowers
1 echo line trimmer
1 Stihl line trimmer

Now I'm going to say each lawn is about half a acre.

No one can answer that Q......

You will find that some days you will hit all time records, and then others... blaaaa

lawns are all diffrent sizes and shapes... there even in diffrent locations....

start keeping good records, and you will have your answer very quickly...

But remember, when the little old lady comes out to talk, "because your the only person she has seen in a week" Dont think of it as lost time..... think of it as an envestment.....

Today in 6 hours we only did 8 lawns. I would like to hit 25 in a 12 hour period. Our goal is to reach 100 lawns by the end of the season.
I agree with you about the "old lady". We are very friendly with all our customers, But I really try to avoid the "old lady" during cutting.

Thanks for your help, I'm sure I will be needing alot more!!!

Our best was 19 lawns in 11 hours. 2 guys, 2 mowers, 2 trimmers, 2 blowers. Could probably have done better if it wasn't growing as fast as it was.

I'm with this guy and privatelawn, with residential you will find that you should be getting atleast 1 lawn every 30 minutes, with driving time. Now, thats on a route within one city if your driving all over the damn place then obviously you won't hit that.

In 12 hours, I could probably pull off 15 lawns - most sized 1/8 to 1/3 of an acre. Thats working by myself with a 36" walkbehind, trimmer, and cheap-o blower.

But my record is 12 lawns - took approximately 10 hours travel and break time included.

Also try NOT to become like some larger co's and do a crappy job trying to do a ton of them in 1 day,,,,

I'm getting older these days and some days I feel GREAT, other days I just cant seem to get going, This seems play a big part too,

Thanks to everyone for the help. I think I'm going to shot for 25 in a 12 hour period. With the stander it seems so easy. Weed whacking is the worst. But yes I agree I will not allow my company to become one of these blow in the street companies.
Again thanks alot

30 today. Toro Z 52 deck, all bagged, trimmed and looking nice! Just me!

I do about 10 a day by myself in about 6 hours. At my former company a crew of 3 would do a 12 hour day doing about 60 seperate lawns in a condo complex of about 30 acres about 65% bagged and trim and blow them all off. We used to put the blower on the mowing deck and drive around blowing off all the driveways and literally run around the back yards blowing off the patios. We had 3 days straight in which we did 5 condo complexes totalling about 150 yards, but we also had a 72inch grasshopper on our crew and an exmark navigator, which was my personal favorite, thing could mow any grass on the wettest day and never clog like the walkers.

I normally do 30-40 a day with me and the helper in 8 hours max but only about 3 days a week for now as not enough customers yet for more days.

You guys must be mowing all town-homes or either the lawns are very small to be doing 30 to 40 lawns daily w/ just a two man crew. Now, I do think 30 to 40 can be done, but with only two guys, quality has to be sacrificed. We do a lot of high end properties that have at least 3/4 of a acre or more. The neighborhood we were in yesterday, we have 36 homes all close to about a acre each. It takes my two - three man crews about 8 hours w/ lunch. Thats line edging all the landscape beds, blade edging the curb area, spraying and treating all landscape areas, and blowing everything OFF the lawn and out of the cracks from the edging, w/ 3 mowers going.

But anyway....
My personal best is 16 all in the same neighborhood in one day with my turf tiger the day after I first got her...

Best two man day was 24

Best three man day was 36, working from 8am to 9pm

Best six man day was 65 homes, spread out within 5 different neighborhoods all within 2 to 3 mins of each other.

Theses were all great days, but not consistent. I try to keep our schedules tight as possible, to avoid burning my guys out. I see some LCO's running their guys all day long, and I always see new faces weeks later. I mean, its cool for us as owners, because we are getting a huge piece of the pie, but for a guy making penny's compare to you, he will be looking to move on first chance he gets.

Thanks, This Wedensday I will try to get 21 done in 12 hours with 3 guys, 2 mowing 1 with the line trimmer.
All the lawns are less then 2 min from each other. I'll be using 42" Stander and a 36" Bobcat with Velke wheels.
I'll be very upset if we can't complete this, thats more then 30 min per lawn.
I'll tell you how it works out

$400 per day for a two-man crew is minimal. Drive time kills. We try to get $40 per hour per man.

06-04-2007, 09:30 PM
How do you make money at $400 per a day for a two man crew? I do well over that with just myself... and even better with a two man crew for a day.

I'm solo and I just did 17 lawns 1/4 to a little over a 1/3 acre in a 12 hour period and a little over one hundred miles. Some with a 52" Ferris Z and a few with a Ferris 36 hydro. Lots of hustle and over $500.00.
