View Full Version : Which type of Axle should I get?

I am shopping to have a new 7 X 15 dual axle trailer built. I want to have one with two 5200lbs axles with brakes on each for a 10.4K gross rating.
I am confused about which type of axle would be best for me.

Could anyone tell me of the pros and cons of the following types:? 1) Standard/straight, 2) Torsion 3) the Drop axle. I plan to haul up to three 400 sq/ft pallets of sod from time to time. What do you think? Which type should I go with and why?

I am currently leaning towards the drop axle so as to lower any gate clearance/slope issues. Any input on this is appreciated.

With the drop axle the back end is pretty low....it can drag when coming out of concrete road ramps. We cut our curb to back in and the trailer drags when we back in so we had to go at an angle.

I did talk to one trailer fabricator and he said that the torsion axles have rubber joints/inserts and will crack or loosen up in time with the Florida heat. Also he said that the drop axle have a tendancy to toe in at the top if the trailer gets overloaded, much more so than any others. Additionally, the drop axle has more linkage and will need bushings replaced.

Can anyone add to this? Does this sound right?

I build trailers at my welding shop here in Miami. I've never had an issue with the rubber in torsion axles due to weather related heat. Most of the rubber used in these axles is "compounded" for durability.
