to kill most of the weeds try a broad leaf killer or rent a rototiller and start fresh

First off, there's not much you can do about the lawn now, it has to wait until September
because it's too hot and you'll only waste time and money.

For the weeds, Round-up but do NOT spray r/u in the lawn!
Just for the sidewalk, etc, and I wouldn't be questioning what is a weed or not,
just spray it all real good and be done with it.

In September, some folks might till up a lawn but I think that's a bad idea.
For one, most folks never call Miss Utility, and there's a fine chance you'll tear up some kind of cable or underground line.
For another, a good percent of the time you'll be left with a turf surface that resembles a farming field in terms of smoothness.

Do as you wish, but I'd core aerate it, then dump (all this per 1/4 acre):
50 pounds of 90% seed,
1 bag of 10-30-0 fertilizer
> the numbers can be approximate but close, like 8-27-4 or 14-36-8, for example, do not go below 26 or over 40 in the center.
>> HIGH center number indicates it is a starter fertilizer, you can do slow release but straight farm fert is cheaper and works like BOOM!
3 bags of lime and 3 bags of gypsum
(1 bag = 40 or 50 lbs).
> Per 1/4 acre, that is.

Wait until next spring to deal with weeds in the lawn itself,
you can NOT spray lawn weed killer when there's seed in the soil,
best to start with a solid lawn then worry about the weeds, otherwise you have nothing.

Peace and good luck

The first picture is a solid gravel based driveway area. It will not be a lawn (unless you remove all the layer of gravel - why bother). As far as that area and the patio, just spray it with Roundup. Also mix some hard enough to spray the tree growing against the house. Remove the junk piles, and the broken picket fence, the and horizontal pieces of plywood, paint the rest or the house, and you are then ready to think about lawn and landscape. The lawn CAN be patched now if they could water everyday for a while. Some good fert., and the rest of the lawn would thicken right up. A liquid SELECTIVE weed killer would work there, as well - something like "weed-b-gone".

2-4D on the dandies + fert for the grass spring & early fall. Seed thin/bare areas in late Aug/early Sep.
