We had a bad expeience with Wal-Mart. The store manager called us needing immediate service because some bigwig was coming through.

He told us what the previous service was paid, and that was what we should charge- $300.00 per cutting.

Realizing the previous service was not reliable at the $300 level I offered $400 and we were hired, under the assumption the service would be recurring.

After cutting we were paid cash and told we would not be needed anymore. We provided good service and in seven years have not been fired for sloppy work.

I suspect they reverted to their $300.00 service, but just needed someone right away before the bigwigs came through.

Had I known what would happen, I would have offered $500.00 per cut.

BOTTOM LINE: NO FAVORS FOR WAL-MART!!!

We've had a WalMart in our town for 2 years. In that time I think they've had at least 4 different LCOs, I wouldn't waste my time with them. Ps. this is going to sound stupid but what does LOL mean, I see you guys use it all the time and I can't figure it out.

LOL= Laugh out loud. Means something was funny and caused you to laugh.

I saw another guy mowing our Walmart the other day and was wondering if they had let the last guy go or just re-did contracts.

I'm sure their about like all the rest. Looks good from the outside but things change when you get it.

Nope, no bad experiences with Wally-World. As a matter of fact it's my best account, but it's not a store it's a distribution center. The place is huge, the warehouse is almost a half-mile square. The people are great to get along with and the grounds maintenance pays very good, and they pay on time. I don't know about the stores, but I'm very satisfied maintaining this distribution center.

I'm not sure what you guys Wal-Marts look like but our is a mess. I don't think they have ever done a weed control. The few trees they have are awful looking. Sam's club (next door) has no weeds but their landscape beds are a mess. The lawn looks ok except for the fact that irrigation would be great! I don't think I would ever do our Sam's or Walmart due to the pre-mow junk clean up. We have Sam's, Walmart, and Lowes next door to each other and Home Depot across the street. The debris are unbelievable.

I'm putting together a bid for landscape maintenance for a local WalMart - and would like to ask a few questions to someone who has worked with them.

Almost all my experience is with residential customers - I want to make sure I cover all the important issues in the agreement.

Any sugestions/comments would be greatly appreciated.

You can email me directly or respond on this thread.

Wal-Mart's building a distribution center here. I'd like to bid on mowing their lawn. Do you have a way I could contact someone in the distribution end of the business? I checked at the local supercenter, but the assistant manager didn't know.

You can e-mail me if you like.
I'd appreciate anything you could send me.

We service 3 stores similar to Wal-Mart, (pix on Lawn pix page).
Be sure you have huge litter bags on your mowers. Other than the trash, they are good accounts.

A little homework up front can pay off down the road. Wal-Marts often don't own their real estate, they lease it from a third party investor/developer (especially their larger distribution centers). That being said, the obligation for common area maintenance (parking lot, landscaping, etc) depends on how the lease is structured. If its a free-standing retail store, its a toss-up. However, if its part of a strip center, the landlord is likely responsible. It may take a while to get to the bottom of who the right person to speak with is, but the general manager for the store should be a good start. Also, if its a strip center, look for company name/phone number signs in vacant storefronts, which will lead to the ownership. And these types of owners rarely own just one of these strip centers, so think big.
