14 to 17 hp engine swap scag
good evening fellas , I just purchased a 17hp Kawasaki engine for the scag hydro.which had a 14 kawi,. the mower has an electric clutch. the problem is the wiring ,I cant figure it out.The NEW engine has 2 wires coming from it, 1 ,I believe is for the clutch the other for the engine stop switch.The terminal ends on these wires coming from the engine are a blade terminal and a round or barrel type terminal on the other wire. Now, the main problem is, that the wires coming from the mower is a 3 bladed terminal harness and the harness that connects the clutch to the mower power source is a 2 bladed terminal harness.I am confused as to hook up what, where. I can connect the clutch harness to the mower, but then what. please if you can shed a little info I would be deeply indebted to you. Before I get WIRED UP. I did do a search but to no avail. Also anything I should watch out for. I did get the clutch and pulley of with no problem off the old one. THANK YOU MUCH. Are you sure that your new engine has a coil to run your electric clutch. What is the model number? ex: FH500V-AS02

yes well almost its fh500v-cso2, according to the wiring diagram it has 2 wires 1 for the engine stop switch the other for the clutch. It does have a charging coil. THANKS I need a little guidance on what to do with this info.

You need to answer a few questions;
What colors are the wires on the new engine ?
The old engine was plugged into a voltage regulator mounted on the frame of the mower correct ?
Post the model and serial numbers off your Scag so I can give the wire diagram a quick gander before making any suggestions, I need to verify one wire.

Yes the old engine was a fc 420v -HS09 kawi and it did plug nto a 3 bladed terminal harness on the mower deck. The clutch also plugged in off the mower deckwith a 2 bladed terminal harness.The mower is a Scag SWZ48KA Serial#3250284 The new engines wires are red with a female blade terminal which I believe is for the clutch, and the other is black with a barrel type terminal on the end which might be or probably is the engine stop.However I don,t know how the connections are made with the existing harnesses since they wont fit into each other.I know I probably have to splice or purchase a different harness.THANKS again for your help.

OK Bobby, We have some pretty pictures here;
The picture below shows the three wire plug connector that the old engine plugged into, There are two red wires and one white wire.
Connect the black wire from the new engine to the white wire in this plug connector, Doing this will maintain all factory safety switch operations.
You can get the proper wire connectors needed for splicing at any auto parts store.
I just helped a guy with the same unit a couple weeks ago and had these pics. saved, I would have never guessed I'd use them a second time.

If you are speaking of the black harness ground wire that was bolted to the rear engine mount screw, YES it must be re-connected to the same engine mount screw on the new engine. Not the black wire from the new engine.

1 more question if I may please. When you say red wire you mean the one coming from the engine I assume? And when you say harness do you mean to join the red wire from engine to the yellow wire I just cut from the regulator?I know its me sometimes I can't follow simple directions.And what do I do with the other end of the yellow wire i just cut.

That's OK Bobby, The other guy didn't quite understand either, That was the reason for the pretty pictures.
When you say red wire you mean the one coming from the engine I assume?
And when you say harness do you mean to join the red wire from engine to the yellow wire I just cut from the regulator?
And what do I do with the other end of the yellow wire i just cut.
Leave it hanging there, It's dead without the old engine.
Take the black wire from the new engine and join it to the white wire that is in the three wire connector with the two red wires.

Hey Rob -
Don't want to hijack Bobby's thead here, but I just wanted to say that I'm glad to see that all your hard work on my Scag engine swap wasn't a one-and-done project! :) Nice that someone else was able to benefit from it as well... and so soon, at that.
My Scag's running beautifully. Mowed with it today after work, in fact. I got the Tiny Tach as you recommended and have a few minor adjustments that I need help with, but it's mowing great as-is so I haven't gotten around to reposting. Here's a pic of the beauty with the new motor...

No problem Buzz. Could you let me know if there was a noticeable difference between the 14 and the 17 hp.The reason I ask is because I have an old toro 36 that Ive been using while my scag is down and to me it seems that the toro cuts a lot better than the scag.YEA! that guy Restorob seems to know his stuff, People like him make this site what it is.

Actually, Bobby, I upsized the motor on my Scag. Mine had a 12.5hp Kawasaki and I replaced it with a new 15.5hp Briggs. I bought this mower with a blown motor so I have nothing to compare it to, but I cuts fantastically with the new motor.
