I've got a customer that has bought 46 bags of mulch. I've got to go pick it up this afternoon so I don't know if it is 2cu-ft or 3cu-ft bags. I know a lot of you charge anywhere from $50-$75 a yard for bulk mulch. Do you still charge the same way or do you charge by the bag? If so how much would you say?

Charge by the yard still,
27 cu. ft = 1 yard,
so 13.5 - 2 cu. ft baggs, or 9 2 cu. ft bags equal a yard.

Just make sure you charge enough per yard for installation to make some good money, and tack on a delivery charge for picking them up.

ok I just emailed her back and asked her if she got any pinestraw also. So here is what she actually got. 25 bales of pinestraw and 21 bags of mulch. How much would you guys charge for this? (Still don't know if they are 2 cu. ft or 3 cu. ft.)

Well you need to find out what size the bags are.

at 2 cubic foot/bag, that's 1.5 yards.

at 3 cubic feet/bag, that's 2.3 yards, so there will be a little price difference there. I have no idea on pine straw, never done it and not familliar with the pricing.

I'm aware of that.

Depending on the size of the bags, the price to install it is going to be different. Unless he is simply quoting the customer an hourly rate.

yes the per yard price is the same whether its bagged or bulk.
remember in this situation your selling your time, the customer had already elim. any profit on the markup for the mat'l.
PRICE ACCORDINLY

Ask them if they have receipts, tell him to get his money back and go buy in bulk......Bags suck to deal with in general

They're nice if you have to go up hill. Just figure out how long it'll take you to install it. You should be able to drop 2 yards in an hour easy.

ok they are the 2cu ft bags. Thats 1.55 yards of mulch. Since I'm just doing labor here is what I was thinking and tell me if I am too low or too high.

25 bales of pinestraw- $2.5 per bale spread=$62.5
1.55 yards of mulch- $30 per yard=$46.5
Total=$109

Is this about right?

sounds fair to me, if it is a bigger yard which requires more toting, increase just a bit. imo..

Again, can't comment on the pinestraw, never laid it down.

As for the mulch, I would charge around 40-45 per yard to put it down. Having the bags might make it take a little longer. I guess it depends on how close the beds are to the stack of bags. But having to tear all those bags open individually and dump them, I'd charge no less than 65 bucks.
