We have been looking at purchasing a new lawn mower. These are the 2:

Scag Wildcat - Sale price $7800. Gas power engine, 27 horse, 61 inch cut
Kubota ZD326S - Sale price $10,100. Diesel engine, 26 horse, 60 inch cut

Both have features that we like. Both are zero turn mowers with deck under
mower.

We have 3 acres to mow. Some very rough (previous horse pasture).

We would appreciate thoughts, experiences, etc. Please advise.

Thanks!

Roger

You couldn't be comparing two more different ZTR's!

I would go with the best dealer.

Whatever you DO get....make sure you maintain a low PSI in your tires. Casters at 6-8 and drive tires at 8-10. This will make a BIG difference.

I think you are comparing two different levels of mowers. I have a Wildcat with the 26hp LC kawasaki and and extremely pleased. Mine has 52" deck, chosen for size to fit through doors on storage shed. I am mowing a little over half of what you mentioned and only takes a little over an hour with a lot of obstacles, and not the smoothest as it was formerly pasture, hayfield.

I would suspect the Kubota would be more economical to operate, and the diesel would probably outlast the gasser by a wide margin plus probably not be as loud to operate( my guess from sound of diesels compared to gas engines).

That said the Wildcat is an excellent unit and you can buy a lot of gas for the price difference.

Thanks for the replies. I know that it is not really comparing apples to apples, but I am looking for the advantages/disadvantages to each. I'm not sure whether to go with the gas and maybe shorter life span or the diesel? Plus, I want to know people's experiences with both units. This is a major purchase for me and I want to ensure that I get more bang for the buck. Any other thoughts?

The Kubota diesel will probably outlast the mower. The gas engine should last 2000 hours if maintained. Mowing 3 acres in Kentucky should result in no more than 100 hours a year. 20 years seems like a long time.

I just got the 61" Turf Tiger with 27 Kohler. This some were between the 2 you are looking at.

RogerThe $10,100 is a good price on the kubota 326s.I just bought a kubota 326 pro 60 inch deck two weeks ago and love it.I paid $10,700 for the pro model.coobie:)

Thanks for the replies. Just this afternoon, we bought a Scag Turf Tiger. It wasn't what we looked at originally, which was a Wildcat. However, we were impressed with some of the upgrades (i.e., springs on seat for easier riding, super easy access to belts, etc.) I'm feel good about our decision.

What engine and deck did you get?

It has the Kohler 27 horse engine and 61 inch deck. The price was $9,600 (on sale). From all the research I did before hand, I think it is a fairly good deal. Of course, if it is not, I'm not sure I want to know!

Those prices on the wildcat and kubota were very good.
$9600 for the tiger is closer to msrp than the others were, but it is a great machine.

Turf Tiger is a grass eating machine that is built like a tank. I think you will be very happy.:)
