View Full Version : Pulling a Trailer w/Skid - ??

Well, unfortunately I had to sell my f550 with a v-10 due to gas prices. I wasn't averaging to well at the pump.

Anyways, I'm looking at buying a used truck to pull a skid weighing about 6000lbs on a 14gvwr dump trailer. My question is, will a 3/4 Ford (older 1984) or a 1995 Dodge 2500 (v10) due the job?? If not, what would? What are you guys/gals using to pull one? I know, I should of kept the 550, but I was losing big time with the gas situation. Keep in mind, I'm in to keeping costs relatively low and do not want to go out an buy a new truck.

I have a 96 v10 you wont be saving much on gas with that i pull a 16' trailer loaded a little over 7000 pounds it pulls it just fine tons of power but i am getting about 5.5 to 6 mpg in town and about 9mpg on the highway i cant imagine your 550 was doing much worse. I dont know if it would pull 14k on the trailer fully loaded though

Actually, I was averaging about 6-7 without the trailer with my 550. I don't know why, but it was baaad.
Thanks for you input. I'll keep that in mind, maybe I will have to go down the diesel route. Hmmm.... maybe another monthly payment (ouch).

a 3/4 ton truck ought to pull a small loader just fine. Deisel engine will get better mileage. sounds like you have plenty of trailer already.

any v-10 will get crappy mileage. you need a diesel if you want anything with decent milage.

I have a 97 gmc 1/2 with a 350 pulling a 8000lb track loader. Just fine with trailer brakes. It does have 4.10 gears though and air bags.
