I have a 2006 sur-trac 5x12 with 2ft steel sides. The size is good but when I put 2 yards of top soil on it yesterday I think it was overloaded. The weight I think was 4000lbs and I have 3500lbs axle. Also I don't know what weight you need trailer breaks at? Can I have a second axle with breakes put on? A dump trailer won't be beneficial because all my jobs seem to be in back yards. I also don't have room or need for 2 trailers. Or should I be looking for a new trailer? Thanks, Sorry I am new to DOT regulation stuff for weight and what not.

Get a heavier duty trailer and sell your present trailer to offset the cost. Since you know who the manufacturer is of your trailer you should also know the rated capacity and empty weight.
See the other thread here about a bent trailer and take heed.
Look up the info you need on required brakes or call the local motor vehicle department in your state. Only they can give you the correct information.
