I have a customer needing some steps installed in their backyard. They will be constructed by 6x6 timbers. I have done small jobs but nothing this big. I am not sure on how to calculate for number of steps. Here are the dimensions.
It is 40 foot slope from side porch to corner of the house at the toe of the slope. Their is a 17 foot difference in elevation. Please help me out.

Thanks:usflag:

Use an 8" timber so you'll have less steps. The timber is actually 7 1/2".

You should have about 5" of slope to count for.....1/8" per foot.

Then divide your drop by 7 1/2" and you have the # of steps.

Next you run into design. Straight? Landings? Walkways? Landscaping etc etc......

If they've got the budget and depending on the landscape.......poor concrete and mason it up. I'm a stone guy.

Are you aware of how to correctly build steps with timbers?

Also, check out my post in here and take a look at using boulders as steps. That is the fastest way to do something like this.
