Does grass go dormant? How do you tell if its dormant? Can it be brought out of dormancy by just watering?

My thinking is that heat, like cold, can cause dormancy. In both cases the plants need water. The natural process is the water draining out of the leaf to preserve the root if it has to. Ideally it just stops growing and maintains proper moisture throughout.
We have already had a hot spell in which the well irrrigated lawns stopped growing for a while but should be more clippings this week. In other areas, the grasses have been shrinking back. So they are either dormant or dead.
