Surface for dog run/area

Redoing a back yard and will be making a small portion of in fenced in for 2 dogs. Any ideas on a good surface. Customer is worried about the area (approx 15ftX15ft shaded) and that it might smell like pee all the time. Not really worried about the look of the area since we will be planting some shrubbery to break it up.

what about concrete???? easy to clean. just put some mats on top so it's easier on the dogs.

If they are mostly outside dogs a concrete pad will be beneficial for them, keeps the nails down to a respectful length also our dogs like the feel of cool crete. They should have some kind of shaded area for the summer heat. Plant some fragrant flowering shrubs or perennials to help some with the potential pee/doo doo smell. Concrete hoses off great.
