How much new soil for lawn renovation?

I'm seeded and sodded several lawns now but I'm not sure how much soil I need to add for this job.

The yard was filled with weeds which I took care of with a sod cutter. Right now the yard has very little existing soil just rock and gravel. Is 2 in. of fresh soil enough or do I need more. The customer wants the front yard seeded and the back yard sodded. I assume the sodded area would need a little less new soil.

Down here in S. Texas my sod guy says 6" min. we often have periods of 6 weeks with no measurable rain and 100+ temps. your area is different but I guess that 2" is not enough.

And I've grown turfgrass on gravel cartpaths.....do they have irrigation?....willing to use it?


By the way....80% of cool season turfgrass roots will be located in the top 3 inches
