Looking for a new stick edger. Preferably 4 cycle. What have you all used and were happy with? Should I purchase a stick edger or get a split shaft trimmer with attachments?

You want a 4 cycle so I won't be much help. But I run the Echo PAS-260 units. 2 cycle I know, but work great. No down time on power heads or edger attachments. (2 units, 1 for 3 yrs ! for 1 1/2 yr.)

Captain, does your 2 cycle bog down when edging? I had a 2 cycle with split shaft and the edger attachment. It would bog down when edging any slight over growth, only good for already clean edges. Won't even go through an inch of over growth. That is part of the reason I would go 4 cycle.

I use a Stihl KM85R split shaft. Granted they aren't available new anymore, but it is a 2 stroke and it never bogs down while edging(or weeding for that matter). Even on overgrown stuff. Before that, I had a Ryobi, in which the engine actually had a larger displacement 31 cc compared to 29cc, and it would bog down on the smallest of challenges. If you can find one used, I can recommend it as a 2 stroke. I've never used a 4 stroke, so I can't recommend anything of that type.

I use the stihl weedeater. You can take the head off and add an edger or hedge trimmer. Plenty of power but the change is time consuming!

STIHL 4-Mix engines are amazing! I have the STIHL FC 110 straight shaft edger, theres nothing that can stop this machine. I think i paid like $400 for mine. -Mitch-

are the stihl 4 cycle an oil mix or are they seperate? I might consider one if its an oil mix. What ratio do they recommend also? I really like stihl equipment and plan on also buying a string trimmer too.

Not unless it's real heavy growth or a first time edging or if the soil is wet. The I have to go slower. I clean it cutting head each time and put a new blade on about every 8 hours.

Cost was about $400-450 for the power head and attachment. (Don't remember for sure.) I don't think there's much differance in cost between the Echo and the Stihl.
Good luck with your choice....
