So I have several accounts that I feel would benefit from being verticut however I know very little about the practice myself. The lawns are the 5'' thick type that you and your equipment sink down into when you set foot on them. Any suggestions?

Yes, get a power rake - usually you can rent one locally.
And make sure you have a huge tarp and trailer to transport the debris.
Verticutting machines commonly seen on golf courses are meant for finer bladed, more dense stands of turf.
So the power rake is the way to go.
But, like I said be prepared for a ton of undecomposed organic matter to haul away and dispose of.
For instance, on one residential site of about 14K square feet that had never been power raked before, the crew generated over 35 cubic yards of debris that first year.
Each successive year has been less till now we can just use the Jrco rakes and bag with the Navigator.
