I'm going to take a look at a used mower today. A 48" Encore with 380 hours. It's at a dealer and they are asking $3500. I'm just looking for advice on what I should look for on the machine to make sure that I'm not buying a piece of junk that is going to need tons of work. With 380 hours I can't see it having too many problems. Also, $3500 seems like a fair price, correct? And what are the general opinions on encore mowers?

Forgot to mention, it is a ZTR.

I just purchased a new Ferris 48" 15 hp. DD for $3900 plus tax. Look around that seems high to me.

Check to make sure the hydros are working smoothly. If there's any hesitation or grabbing...skip it.

Take the belts off from the deck and PTO to deck and make sure all the pullies are not worn out. Also, with the belts off, preferably, take the end of each blade and make sure there isn't much play in the spindles.

Things to check for:
play in the spindles
gas in the oil
smokey exhaust
smooth hydros
cracks in the best
funny sounds
cracked frame

but most of all

Check for rust in hidden places. Also check to see how much dirt is packed in hard to wash places.

I've never used an encore mower, so I can't really comment on their quality. Some items you might want to check are; the spindles- make sure they're quiet, make sure it starts and runs smooth, make sure the hydro pumps are relatively quiet with no leaks, check for oil leaks, check oil color, check all filters, and ask for maintenance records if they have any.

you might just get an overall feel for how well its been taken care of, has it been repainted, does the overall condition look really worn? i know this seem kinda general but hopfully it helps.
