Hey guys thanks for the info on the compression relief problem. From that info basically the comp relief mechanism on the cam must have broken or failed since there in no movement whatsoever of the rocker arm. So now onto my next option...since this mover was a freebie, and is in excellent shape (mower deck undeside still has a lot od the original sliver MTD paint on it!) I want to know if it is possible to add a recoil starter (part #590714) to the cowl and pull start the machine knowing that there is no comp relief. Can it be pull started or will I end up dislocating my shoulder.... (I know the Kawi on my 4 wheeler has a manual comp relief lever and boy if you forget to flip it and try pull starting it, it will yank that starter rope right out of your hand...)
I dont have the time right now to repalce the cam. So what say the experts??? thanks dave

Hmmm, I don't guess you have priced that recoil assembly.
And you still need the cup/screen and spacer between the recoil assembly and the blower housing.
Also, Do you have the threaded holes in your blower housing to mount the recoil assembly ?
I have never tried to rope start one with-out the release but that's a lot of money to spend to find out you can't, It could be like starting one with a partly sheared flywheel key (ouch).
They are also proud of that camshaft too;
They do have a compression release repair kit providing your camshaft is OK other than that;
Oh, It shouldn't take but a hour and a half or less to repair/replace the cam.
Good Luck !

You would be better off to fix or replace the cam. You will spend more time & money trying to get a pull start to work. The cam replacement is a pretty simple job.
