My father has a wheelhorse lawn tractor that we are trying to find out the year of. All we have to go by is the serial number which is 71-08K801-1084-7069. If you can provide any info I would be greatful.:usflag:

Do you have the model number off the tractor ?

There is a better chance with the model and serial number off the engine if it's the original one.

Restrorob, Thank you for your info. I have contacted Toro whom bought Wheelhorse and found out that the tractor was manuf. in 1977.

Manf in 77-

From another forum-
Model C-141
Ser. 81-14K801-09073
Which was manf in 78 & is 14HP.

Apparently add the first digit to 1970???
HP is in the second set of numbers???
Wit, is your's an 8HP?

Sorry, Couldn't find anything with the C-85 number.

You can't find any other numbers on this unit ?

From the above link-
"...the C-85 was made from 1980 to 1983 here is a list of ID numbers per year
1980 01-08K801
1981 01-08K802
1982 01-08K803
1983 11-08K801
Check your ID tag for one of these numbers...."

Hmmm, Bill the 1980/81 is listed as C-81 instead of C-85 ?

01-08K801
1980
C-81 8-Speed Tractor

01-08K802
1981
C-81 8-Speed Tractor

Here is the C-85;

01-08K803
1982
C-85 8-Speed Tractor

And this one;

11-08K801
1983
C-85 8-Speed Tractor

Possibly the engine was changed/replaced ?

it is very possible that this engine is not the origional. i do not know the history of the machine. also the machine is very rusted so i believe that the tag fell off at some point.

there is some delay between when an engine is manufactured and when the machine that it is installed in is sold. although this would be an extreme case of lag, perhaps it could explain this difference in model year and engine year. thoughts?

the electrical on this machine is very messed up. it has been cut and has loose wires all over the place. the engine doesnt have spark. the points are fine. gap is no problem. there is still no spark. i would like to know where all the wires on this engine go. there are two heavier white ones. i would assume that these are for the charging circuit. then there are ones on the big ignition item that is shaped like a soda can. one goes to the spark plug. where should the other two go. i think one goes to what i believe is the condenser. the other is spliced together and is about 2 feet long this is not attached to anything.

diagram???

You can download a service manual for the engine from the link.
Chapter 8 will have at least some of the engine wiring-

The "soda can" sounds like the ign. coil-

The soda can object is the coil, The two small post on top have a + and - by the post. The + post on the coil goes to the ignition post on the ignition switch. The - post goes to the points/condenser.

You can take the long spiced wire if it is hooked to the + post on the coil and hook it straight to a battery to test run the engine until the rest of the wiring is repaired.

is this wire typically hooked up through the ignition switch and safety interlocks to the battery?

OK, Here's the basic wire diagram for the engine from the link Bill posted;

Here is a C series wire diagram, From what I could tell the C-81 and C-85 used the same harness, Just see if this doesn't have the same components in it as your unit.
