I knew what this was one block away (note the orangish color). The homeowner was outside, so I told him he should spray ASAP. I also handed him a fact sheet regarding 'greenbug aphids'. He told me that his lawn service (you can probably guess which one) told him a month ago that is was "brown patch", and it would go away if he watered more (he has a sprinkler system). When he saw the aphids with my magnifying glass, he immediately called :___ _____" and told them to "get their a$$ out here". I ended up doing a "truck estimate" for him as well as his next door neighbor. This happened today.

You guys have any similar experiences?

Yes, it is regional. Seems to be most common in the western Midwest, and usually only affecting Kentucky bluegrass. I've never seen these rascals on St Augustine or Bermuda or tif (hybrid) bermuda. Search Iowa State University for detailed info. The aphid eggs are carried on the upper air currents, then "dropped" when winds encounter obstacles (especially trees).

These guys are a weird bug indeed.:usflag:

Haven't seen any here yet. Well, maybe once a couple years ago I guess.

Around here, we don't really have anything that loos like that as far as insect damage. we have chinch bug damage, but it is seldomly in areas that large, and is a bit more spiratic than that. In other words. you may see more rashes of green in there where some of the grass is still hanging in there. The way it is solid like that - especially around the edges, it resembles more like our grub damage.

I've seen aphid damage, but never like that. Usually under the drip line like Kosar said. Would that be "large" brown patch??!!

With most warm season grasses, the growth rate is so rapid during the growing season that its had to tell when a lawn has been invaded by bugs. Plus, once the lawns go dormant, there is nothing to eat so they would all die. Bermuda I think is the toughest lawn you can have....and if well treated it is easy to control.

with that aphid damage will grass recover after treatment?

what type of turf is that

It is 100% Kentucky bluegrass, and it is irrigated on a regular basis. Too bad this large corner lot turned out to be an eye sore. I feel sorry for the guy. He told me he was paying $40 per app. It's 11,500 sq.ft. Our price was in the $50 range. I know the competitor (largest in the USA), and their salemen often do not measure lawns when they run estimates.

ISU says even without treatment, the lawns "usually" recover, but not until November or even until next spring, so treatment greatly speeds recovery so the lawns looks normal again in a month or so.l:usflag:

I notice the lawn next door looks pretty good. This reminds me of a guy that cancelled this year to go with a cheaper price by another local private company. (Some of these guys are just starting to get STUPID on their prices for the sake of getting work - in what I fear is the beginning of the downfall of THIS aspect of the industry - much like mowing did). Anyway, I saw him outside one day, as I was doing the lawns next door and across the street. His lawn was glowing nicely with a nice light green color while his neighbors' lawns that I was doing were nice and dark green AND getting another ap.. After I was done, I rolled over there and asked how things were going with the new service. He said ok, and I said "I can see that you are saving some money, so THAT's good!"
He said. Well,...I had to cut back,...you were just a little expensive compared to others.
I said. "Well, I see you have around a $300,000 home. You may have around $20,000 worth of landscaping, I know you have $3,000 in to an irrigation system, You pay to water it. You probably have around $100,000 worth of contents, You drive a nice Escalade that probably costs close to 50 grand, ....Your WIFE drives a nice car,...and you know what really baffles me the most?
He said. "What?"
I said - "That for 15 dollars more,....less than a hundred bucks a year,....your lawn COULD look like that." - (as I pointed across the street).
He looked at me and said. "JOE,....You're an a**." as he had sort of a grin. He said. "When can you do it?"
Needless to say,...his yard was pounded that day.

Nice catch and move in, that sets us "little guys" way apart from the dump and run large franchised guys. I tell all my customers there is a big difference.
