Looking to get a different truck. Would you suggest a full size w/ V-8 or S-10 w/ V-6? Right now I'm pulling around about 2000lbs.
Maybe in the future I like to add an enclosed trailer instead of my 5X10 open. Do you think the V-6 would get the job done or would I be in the same postion that I'm in now with my 2.2 trying to pull an open 5X10 and Walker? Thanks for your input as I'm not sure at what to do. Also what do you think of the newer 305 Chevy engines? Looking at a 1994 Chevy Full Size 4X4.

If your going to go enclosed later,do not buy an S10,get a ful size truck with a 350,and at least 3.73 gears, prefferably 4.10's and a 3/4 ton,but a 1/2 ton and 3.73's will work for small to medium sized enclosed, the 3/4 ton just handles it better, and stops better.Do not buy a 305 if you are definelty going enclosed, the trailer is like a huge sail, the wind drag will bog down a 305 if its a full size trailer,it will bog a 350 too,but its better than a 305.If you could swing it,a turbo diesel is the best for pulling enclosed, but expensive up front, and used usually $$,and abused,or high mileage.

Full size, and ditto what John says about the 350 or diesel.

"There's no substitute for cubic inches", especially when it comes to towing. 4.10's are great towing gears, but not as good for highway mileage.

I'm more familiar with older trucks, but I believe there are two different 3/4 ton models in Chevy's mid-'90's full size lineup: what I call the "light" 3/4 with 6 bolt wheels and the "heavy" 3/4 with 8 bolt wheels. If you're going to be towing, I'd be in favour of the "heavy" 3/4 - besides bigger wheels, it'll also have bigger brakes. I know a few people who've boasted how much their truck could pull - how much it can STOP is just as important!

Looking into selling my S-10 and buying a Chevy 1500. My question is which engine should I be looking for. Most have a 4.3 Vortec V-6 and the others have a 305. A 350 ci. is hard to find. I'll be pulling my 5X10 and Walker which weighs in at about 1900 lbs.
Thanks for your advice. I'm sure I can get a better answer here than at a used car lot with a salesman telling me that oh that engine will pull anything, if you know what I mean.
One other thing what gear ratio should I be looking for?
Thanks,
