 need a little help, recently purchased a ford w/ a PS diesel. My ? what brand oil do most of you use. I use amsoil products for my mowers and i know they make diesel engine oil , but also heard that rotella from shell is pretty good as well. i quess what im worried about is that amsoil is synthetic and not really sure about the rotella. any help would be grateful Tony

I use Shell Rotella T in my diesel lawn mowers and also in the gas engined ones too. I've noticed since I went with this oil a year ago, the lifters in my old 22 Kohler quit clattering completely.

I would first run your truck a while to see if it uses much oil. If it doesn't use oil then go ahead and use your synthetic. If it does use oil then go with the Rotella because of the cost of adding oil would be less.

Shell Rottela T is grea,I use that the most.In the PSD,the oil works harder than in most other engines, since it is compressed up to 3000psi,to fire the injectors, aswell as lubricate the engine,so follow the maintance schedule religiously, and you'll have no trouble with it.I would hope it doesnt burn any oil at all.If you switch to amsoil, consider the bypass filter,so you can take advantage of the oil's capabiltys and extend your interval safely.

I have a 96' PSD and it is a great engine.
I use Castrol HD Dieselall Plus. Have used it since the truck was new. This used to be known as Dryden Dieselall and was part of Castrol's heavy duty division. I knew about this lubricant from a mechanic that serviced a fleet of forklifts for the company I used to work for. Only problem with it is that you can't find it at regular stores. You have to go to dealers that supply heavy truck parts, supplies, etc. My truck uses no oil between changes and I'm looking at 5000 miles for my next change. I also have Blackstone labs do an oil analysis every other change.
Amsoil is probably the best you could use but you would still have to change the oil at the same mileage as before unless you add a second filtration system to it. You can't extend the diesel's oil change schedule without it.
You might want to visit the Ford-diesel.com web site and do a search on oils. That is a web site that you will enjoy anyway.

i would also use the rotella i work for estes express lines (4th largest trucking co. in u.s.) as a mechanic, they have there pm interavals (oil changes) set at 25,000 miles, on class 8 tractors they use rotella exclusively.

Rotella is good. Also specialty makers Texas Refinery Corporation and King Oil Company are the head of the class in premium oil.

Rotella been using it for over 15 years, never any problems or breakdowns from it.
every tug, supply and river boat i've ever worked has used Rotella, had monthly samples tested, never heard of one problem with Rotella.

We use 30wt standard motor oil that meets diesel specs. However, in my opinion the best oil is Mobil Delo 400 for any diesel engine. Also Cummins makes their own oil for diesel engines that have special additives for diesels, however it is a little pricey.

Isn't Delo 400 made by Chevron?? I believe Mobil's diesel oil is called Delvac. :) ;) :) ED
