How many here are from California, say San Fran to L.A. area? Is it possible to make money in lawn care there as a solo operation? Or does the combination of competition with illegal workers and cost of living prohibit making enough to live on as a solo op? I haven't even been to CA yet -- but seasonal work and drought in Michigan is getting pretty tiresome.......!

IM ABOUT AN HOUR EAST OF LA, IVE BEEN DOING THIS FOR THREE YEARS NOW. HONESTLY, AS A SOLO OPERATION YOU CAN DO FINE HERE, PLENTY POTENTIAL CLIENTS TO GO AROUND. HOWEVER YOU MUST KEEP YOUR OVERHEAD LOW. WHEN I STARTED I WANTED TO BE COMPLETLEY LEGIT.(HOW I WAS RAISED I GUESS) i HAD BUSINESS LICENSES, INSURANCE BONDING, ( I DO SMALL INSTALLS AS WELL ) WORKMANS COMP, PAYROLL SPECIALIST ETC. IT TOOK TWO YEARS FOR ME TO REALIZE THAT MOST OF MY IMMEDIATE COMPETITION DONT CARY ANY OF THESE, WORSE YET THEY DON'T EVEN PAY TAXES. ( MY TAX LIABILITY LAST YEAR WAS ALMOST 8000.00 DOLLARS) I SPOKE WITH ONE OF THE ILLEGAL OPPERATIONS ONE DAY AND I ASKED HIM HOW HE SURVUVES OFF OF 4 DOLLARS AN HOUR. hE TOLD ME QUOTE(IN BROKEN UP ENGLISH OF COURSE) " i LIVE WITH MY WHOLE FAMILY IN ONE HOUSE I NEED ONLY 1000.00 A MONTH TO LIVE GOOD. I WORK CAUSE I NEED SOMETHING TO DO" tHIS IS OUR COMPETITION ! AN EXAMPLE OF WHERE I WAS UNDERBID... A COMMERCIAL PROPERTY FULLSERVICE , 1200.00 MONTH 2 GUYS WOULD SPEND PROBABLY 4 HOURS THERE, PRICE INCLUDED MANY MATERIALS. i WAS UNDERBID BY 600.00 DOLLARS. I DROVE BY TO LOOK AT THE PLACE AFTER THEY HAD TAKEN CARE OF IT AND IT WAS HACKED ALL TO BITS. ANYWAY, SORRY FOR THE LONG THREAD. OH YEAH I AM ACTUALLY LOOKING TO GET OUT OF CALIFORNIA BECAUSE I CAN'T DEAL WITH LOWBALLERS LIKE THE ONES WE HAVE ANY MORE.

Happened to catch your threads about SoCal and the LA area. I, too, and thinking about moving there and performing lawn care services. The reason is for family: I currently live in Wichita, KS but my older brother passed away so I am alone here. The majority of my family (and my other brother) lives in the LA area.
I went out there for a week from Aug 19-24th. It seems that the lawns are smaller, but steeper, some with hills. What kind of mower to use? I have a Hustler Mini-Z 52", great for large, flat areas like Kansas but NOT good for LA.
ANY help you can give me in how the world of lawnmowing in LA is would be greatly appreciated!
