Man I wish I could weld or afford a decent welding setup. It would save me some money when I solid axle swap my Toyota. Looks like you can weld from the pics. Looks good.

Is that an arc welder, not a mig? Looking forward to the finished project.

I started thinking it might be after I posted. You really should get it setup to run with gas. Do you do alot of big grilling, or is it just I had the metal laying around and I was bored?

Man, thats real nice work!!!. :clapping: A pit that size goes for alot of money down here if you buy it from a store. Did you make all of your cuts with the saws all? I like the way you made your hindges. I have been wanting a plasma cutter for a long time. You will like your welds alot better if you swith to gas. Post pics when complete.

Heres my set up:

Fastcat: I judge and enter several bbq contest (international winner with a lot of luck) and I have to say them are some really nice looking ribs and butts.
Crisp on the outside. Hard to do without drying out the ribs.
You use very low heat - meat didn’t pull much away from the bone. Nice
Good even smoke ring on the butt. 1/4 inch around.
Some bare bones - so you know it is tender.

Want kind of wood? Oak man myself.
Water pan?
Do contest? If not, they way they look you should.
Homemade rub?

Got to go I’m hungry now.

About 70 miles north of you in Surry county. Good looking food there for sure. I am trying to plan a BBQ for our neighborhood and have been thinking about doing some ribs and a Boston Butt. Hopefully I won't screw it up.

nothing but hickory, no water pan, that was my first ever cook on a smoker, and from what i read my ribs were perfect to contest standards. the rub that i put on them was the best part. i may do a contest sometime but it would have to be fall or winter to busy in cutting season.

if you need any advice about cooking temp, meat temp, prep, rub or anything let me know. you could also go to www.thesmokering.com this website is very helpful and the first time i looked at it i went and built my smoker.

fastcat thanks for the link I will definately follow up on it. All I know is if your food tasted anything close to how it looked visually then you had some happy eaters around there. Oh by the way not including the abt's about how many people will the meat you listed feed? Thanks again

As a shadetree fabricater I must say that thing is sweet. You did a great job. I have an uncle who smokes with an old Propane tank and he swears that the thick steel in those things is what makes such even heat.
