High quality compost suitable to cover the seed, which means if you already seeded it is too late.

May be too late, depends on the type of grass. Generally speaking, all seed prefers to be covered. It helps to provide an environment that promotes germination and also helps reduce the amount of water you need to apply to keep it moist.

If you really want to get some compost down I would put some new seed down before your compost in the event the seed there has already germinated. Make sure you keep the compost to approx. 1/4" depth.
