I think the weather temp. for rye grass needs to be consistantly under 85 degrees.

I believe that ideal temps for rye will be between 65 and 70 or 75 degrees.

I have never messed with rye, but would think that a core aeration would help to make a better seed to soil contact.;)

For sure put down a starter fertilizer and I would then go over with a verticutter. All an aerator does is gets air to the roots of already existing grass. If you do aerate, I would do so before you put down seed.

Is this for overseeding, or for renovation? Renovation is a lot more complex that just aerating, throwing down seed and fert. Overseeding is a lot more simple.

it will be overseeded

I core aerate, put out starter fert. then seed.
After seeding we rakein the plugs.
Does anyone have a preference as to annual or perennial rye?

Why not just rent a slit seeder from your local rental shop? That should do the trick for you. Then apply some starter fertilizer and you are set.

is that around the same as a verticutter?

Well I overseeded two lawns last week. I rented an over seed.

I mowed the grass to a heigt of about an 1" 1/2. Then

I used the overseeder which puts the grass seed to 1/4" deep going over the lawn twice in two different patterns.

A week later i put the starter fert(18-24-12)which was two days
ago.
My next steps are to see some new growth and when i do four weeks later from that day (which should be soon) I will apply fert.(19-19-19). And they should look real good and thick.
