1. clean and remove debris 2. rake dirt smooth 3. fasten an end of the fabric to bed/planting area with sod staples or pins 4. stretch tight and staple along the length of fabric 5. cover with mulch, and plant your plants.

i agree with all that except i would plant the plants then cover with mulch as to not get dirt in mulch and promote weed growth. i would blow excess dirt off after planting then proceed with the finishing touches of the mulch

LOL I agree. If you do this job dont forget to put your weed preventer down before the fabric.

Buy sod staples at John Deere by the box - much better cost . The customer should be advised that weeds will be growing on top of the fabric within a short period of time , depending on the type of mulch used .

Ditto, or find a way to convince them of why it is not necessary and is a waste of money.

Landscaper's Fabric Is For Retail! I've Never Heard Of A Professional Increasing Overhead Without Results. That Is Exactly What This Stuff Does.

Good Advice. Educate the customer. I have many who insist on the fabric.

Mulch decomposes and turns to dirt, when the weeds start to grow they will root into the fabric. The customer is going to hate you in a couple years.

Its a no win situation. One thing you might try for maintenance is each spring stirring a fresh batch of Pre-M into the mulch. Even a hand cultivator to work the mulch over the growing season is a good idea to prevent weeds getting established.
If grasses start in around the base of your flowers and spread the rhizomes under the fabric to the next open spot - the bed is trashed. good luck.
