Seeing there is no simple answer to your question I would highly suggest you spend sometime reading thru the numerous postings that deal with your same question. This website has a very good search engine that by putting in your exact question you can find hundreds of responses.
The bottom line on zero to lawn tractor is the zero is; faster, better cut, more durable, and can get into tighter areas. Time is money and the zeros win hands down in the speed area.
Best of luck.

Maybe it's because the two machines are not even close to being the same?

A zero turn is just what it says it is...zero turn, it can turn 180 in the same footprint, a lawn tractor has to make a long arc like a car to turn around.

It depends on who you target.....
out here on the country we have many small lawn tractors working the fields.
it's true a ZTR simply will NOT do an efficent job on a 5 to 6 acer field.
where as a small lawn tractor would...." small brushhog is what your talking about" ?
a ZTR simply cant cut taller grasses quickly, there for more of a finer cut lake a lawn....
