Length of cut?

Cutting at 3 inches seems to be fairly popular amoung professionals.

Why?

What are the possible problems (if any) with cutting shorter on a regular basis (e.g. 2 1/2) as long as I'm not taking off more than a 1/3 of the blade at a time?

Do an internet search "mowing height" - look at "Mowers and Mowing Height, HYG-1190-93. This is an Ohio State Univ. ext. site, shows recommended height for several types of grass (They say 2 1/2 is fine for anything except bermuda, which I'm sure you don't have). There is always some personal preference involved, and sometimes the upper end of the range is used to help deal with rough property. Oh, yeah - and for those who like to stripe, I hear that the longer grass helps with this. Check out some of Eric's pictures!
