Hey guys I am looking at a 98 chevy 3500 with a 350 v8 and a dump bed. Does anyone have any experience with this truck or is there anything I should look out for? They are asking $8900 and it has 78,000 miles.

seems like a very reasonable price for a one ton dump.
They are great trucks. There is not a lot of payload left after you consider the weight of the dump box.

should have a 454 V8 imo

the 350 is a great engine but wouldnt the 454 V8 be better for a dump truck?

It doesn't seem like too bad of a deal, and not too many miles either.

OK, I have spent many miles behind the wheel of a similar truck only a '94. The 350 is a total hog of an engine in a one ton dump. It can't get out of it's own way empty, let a lone with a load or pulling a trailer. Foot to the floor just to get it to move and then for a few minutes after that. Ours had over load springs. It could have just been the gearing. Towing an 18' trailer with a 60" zero and a 72" zero was a workout and a half. With just the dump bed it was resting on them. Not to mention we only got 7-8 MPG on a good day. I'd pass it up for something with a little more engine. The truck itself is pretty good. Has a few oil leaks and a bad windshield washer fluid tank. A few minor other problems, but the truck only had 60K on it.

it had to have 4.10 in the rear if it was a 1 ton that would be my guess
heres some numbers
ohv V8 5.7 / 350 200-255 300-335
Diesel ohv V8 6.5 / 400 155-180 360
ohv V8 7.4 / 454 230-290 385-410
WOW:eek: that 454 has got some power!

The 454 also seems to have the mileage to go with the power. Not certain on the new ones. My 96 3/4 does ok for power and mileage. Years ago drove a couple of 1 tons with dumps on them. Both were 4 speed manuals with carburetors, they got the job done but you would not win any speed races with them.

It all depends on what you want to do/pull. The 350 will work fine and be very dependable, you just need to remember that it's not a sports car when you pull out in front of someone. :-)
