I just took over a condo complex that draws the irrigation water from the local lake. I have never winterized a system like this. Any suggestions

Well what i usually do when i have no idea whats going on with a takeover ect, is first check out the POC/what kind of controllers there are..I would assume you can shut the pump off @ a breaker....There should be Boiler drain after a ballvalve around or near the pump..tap into the BD,turn the Ball valve as to not allow the water to go back through the pump...

But i have never worked off a job with a lake drawn pump.
just pumps in the ground.
so good luck..

1) shut off the power to the pump
2) there should be some way of hooking up to the main down by the pump, usually a T with a plug (that you remove) on one side to hook up the compressor line to.
3) fire the zones up, fire the compressor up and blow all the zones out.
4) get your waiters on and go out and see how the intake line is rigged up, some are tied to cinder blocks, if you are lucky it is tied to the side of a dock and you can eaisly remove the line without getting wet. be careful of the screen tip, they are fragile and expensive.
5) remove the intake line from the lake, cover both ends of the line when all the water drains out, this way nothing makes a nest.
6) depending on if the pump is covered you might need to remove the pump and put in storage for the winter.
7)MAKE SURE TO DRAIN THE WATER OUT OF THE PUMP, there should be a small drain plug on the bottom of the pump housing. if you do not drain the water it can freeze and split the housing.
there should be unions so you can remove the intake line and pump, i hope you have some big pipe wrenches to loosen them up.
i am sure someone will come along with some more advice.

Pumps will likely have two drain ports, one on the outlet side, and one on the suction side.

We kill the power to the pump, drain main line, drain pump and drain filter....we don't have hard winters here so no zone blowouts needed...

kill the pump, open up valves, open drains voila!
