a young guy, 20 lost his leg the other day in a subdivision we also work in. this is what a co employee of his told me this morning. he was using a bobcat mini, i think it's a mt50 or something. he had the boring unit on and a rod to go under a sidewalk. the machine was idleing and he had the hydro on and the rod was turning. he set the bit on his leg i guess and it started twisting is pant leg up and then twisted him around and around until someone saw him. it tore his leg off and they couldn't reatach it at the hospital. he is in intensive care now. really a bad deal.

Everybody jokes about people "standing around" on sites, most of them are
there to insure someone avoids trashing themselves..you can bet L&I &
OSHA are going to look at lack of supervision. Sorry for the guy.
truly tragic, but what was he doing messing with the bit with the rod turning? That is a textbook recipe for a disaster, and that, unfortunately, is exactly what happened...

wow, that is awful. its sad that sometimes what should be routine and safe activity can become so tragic. i suppose this is why newer units like the vermeers and dw require you to be at the operators station to run attachments
