You are talking two different operations and they both have different timing. seeding needs time to germinate (depends on type grass) and get roots down before freeze. Most grasses take up to 21 days to germinate and another 3 to 4 weeks of good growing to resist the winter. the other alternative is to wait and dormat seed and pray for a good spring. Or just wait till spring and fight the weeds. better chance with a spring seeding than dormat seeding.
There is some good stuff out there to help with spring seeding and weed control. See Scotts starter fert with weed control..used it good stuff
Aeration can be done untill the ground is frozen. It will be beneficial to the grass as the soil will keep moving all winter. Also a fert application late in the year will jump start the lawn in the spring. I have experience with aeration and fert in late nov and early dec here in Nebraska and had great results.
