We're looking at purchasing a truck and want to do some research on load capacities. We're looking at something in the F550 size with 9-10' dump. What's the realsitic load capacity? and in the used market what would be a comparable truck?

Mine have the 19k gvw but its not uncommon to scale out at 21-22k empty we are 10700-10900 depending on how much fuel and tools you have on. I have seen guys go way beyond that. What kind of weight do you need to carry and what are you using the truck for? In MD you really need the 19k gvw to leagally carry 10 yrds of mulch, but then you can only tow up to 7k to stay under the 26 combo.

I have a 2004 19,000 gvwr F-550 dump. The empty weight is right at 10,000 (with tools)... so do the math.

My truck is just a regular cab- but the dump is 11' and I have two large tool boxes underneath, so the weight is up there... It'd be nice to put more in the back!! hehe.

We have an F550 with a 9'. Truck weighs 96xx empty and the GVWR is around 17,XXX so we can fit around 8k legally.

The F-550 can carry a good load but so can the same year F-450 the only difference is the spring pack has 1 extra leaf. The frame is the same the brakes, tires and wheels are the same. The front axle is the same the rear axle isn't but its the same axle housing with 13 inch ring gear. The legal difference is the door post sticker that says the F-550 has a 17,500gvw and the F-450 has a 15,000lb gvw.

If your going to get a F-550 get one with a 165 wheelbase or 84 cab axle so you can run a 11 or 12 foot dump box. A 10 foot box is too short for a 550 you can't get enough weight spread out.

I have put some heavy loads on a F-550 I used to drive they were way past legal loads. The heaviest load was something like 12,000lbs which is allot of weight for a 2 ton truck

The heaviest load I had on my 03 F-450 was 8000lbs the truck handled it fine.

my f550 has a 12' dump, i carry 10 yards of mulch and 5 yards of topsoil no problem. when you have that muc weight in it just remember to dump on level (side to side) ground.
