This is my first year in this industry running my own company,I don't own the fecon but everything else is mine. the classen power rake in the trailer is for sale along with both scags. Its all a little dirty but i just didn't have time to clean the stuff up, in the spring i will get some better ones. i cant wait for spring to come so the company can continue to grow.

why don't you pull that trailer with the topkick?
i had just got that truck going again so i didnt want to drive it very far. i bought it about a year ago as a rust bucket and tore it down to the frame rails sandblasted and painted it. then put a new dump box on it. i also had to do a bunch of mechanical work to it so ive just been running it for jobs around us.

I'm just getting into the land-clearing/tree work but i really enjoy doing it. i was pulling myself out pretty good when the fecon got stuck by chaining off to a tree and then hooking it to the underside of the track. then i would go in reverse and it would pull the chain under me more thus pulling the machine out. it was working good until the bottom dropped out. the pc150 pulled me out no problem though.
the rollers where a option on the trailer i payed $175 extra for them and they are worth every penny. Ive pulled that thing down some drives that once level off leave the trailer wheels up in the air, i just keep going and it rolls along just fine with no damage.it just protects your investment. I'm sure any trailer builder could sell you a set.
yeah the Kodiak can go through some gas in a hurry, i wish it was a diesel but at the time all i could afford was that so i just make due.
i got a very good job driving a truck and managing a warehouse for a heating and cooling company after i got out of high school. i worked there for about a year and put every penny in the bank, it was a depressing and repetitive job with the addition of a pain in the a$$ boss so i gave them 3 minutes notice and quit.

a little less then a 100k will by that machine. but i would not recommend buying one they are under powered for anything over 3''.
the original plan was to get a highflow ct332 and get a mulcher head on it. well the property owner calls me Thursday afternoon and want me to have the main lot done by Saturday. so finding the right machine, buying it, setting it up with a hydro cooler, buying a head, was just going to take to long. thus i rented the fecon.
i would recommend a minimum of 150 per hour for mulching with a machine like that. i plan on getting into the tree service and land clearing a lot more in the future.

the machine and the cutter head is suppose to weigh about 13k pounds. the trailer is a load-trail, its 22' long plus a 2' beaver tail so 24' overall. with a 14k gvw. i bought it from a guy who used it once for less then half of new.

Things are great in my area. There's a bunch of 70's and 80's neighbourhoods that have bungalows on 120'x300' lots that are being torn down and new $2mil+ homes are being built so I get a fair bit of work from some builders. Richmond Hill has the 2nd highest avg family income (about $105k) in ON, just behind Oakville, so there's enough money to go around. This is my first year with a truck so I'm looking to increase income by 5 times. I only did about $6k last year (no truck) so I'm looking for $30k+ this year. Lots of that money will come from sod installs and bobcat work. I'm also looking to buy a Dingo 525.
How many people are in your town?
ff1221
02-06-2008, 09:25 PM
5000 in our town and growing, 12000 in the whole municipality. The average wage here is likey in the 80k to 90k in a single income household. Big boom on for housing, 400 new building lots coming online this year, thats a pile for a town with 5000 people, although I don't know where the people to fill them are going to come from. I think Bruce Power has maxed out it's employee #'s unless they get a new reactor build. My wife and I work together, and did about 130k last year and hoping to improve on that this year. I'd like to get some of this equipment paid for and get a 3 ton with a hook lift and a few bins next year.

You're twisting it for no reason. If you bought a new truck for $60k, I could say "why are you working for X months just for a truck?". You would reply with "I'm paying for it over 5 years so I'm only taking a small bit of earnings each month"
I think over 3 years I'm going to earn about 120k so it really is only 1/4 of that. The amount of 120k thats earned DIRECTLY because of the Dingo will also make it worth while.

I think it takes money to make money and your not always going to make that back within the next day or next job. But on the same token - don't buy a machine cuz you think you can use it. That is like me buying a 85k mini execavtor when I rent one about 3 times a year. It would not justify the means.
I don't understand how you can project you'll make 120K just with the dingo?? Then how much ya making driving your truck to and from? How much do make with your trailer hauling to and from? and everything else you need to add to the job just to make the dingo work.
Either - way go buy the thing. I would look used but whatever.

No I prefer to look at the big picture. I would never buy a new 60k truck that will depreciate like a rock. I would rather put that money in the bank or invest in something that will appreciate.

You don't think you would be better off buying used and then when you can't live w/o the dingo purchasing a new/slightly used one? I bought a 425 two years ago w/ 475 hours for 5k. And I buy used attachment for about a third of what they are new. I still can't come to the conclusion to replace my 425 w/ a new one for 20k even though I use it practically everyday. I guess I am addicted to that black ink.
To me it makes more sense to buy used and then sell it 2-3 years down the road for what I paid for it... or more. It just takes a little patience.
I couldn't really justify spending 20-25k on a newer skid steer that I only used a few times a month.... so I waited and saved. Ended up buying a Cat 248 w/ 2000 hours for $4500. Much easier to justify a paid for machine that doesn't get used 20-30 hours a week.

LAWNWORKS - I here ya. Although I did break down this winter and purchased a new BOBCAT S205 Skid. I did trade in an older skid - got 4 times for what I paid for it 5 years ago and traded in a WAM that was in need of repairs - got 3 times what I paid for that as well. I know the trade vs straight out deals but what was given to-boot, I am better off and in a new machine.

I think it is a little different when you are putting 1000 hours a year on a machine. I buy all my mowers brand new, but on the dingo and skid I only put a few hundred hours a year.
BUT on only 30k of work per year... I don't see how he justifies it. More of a "want" than a "need."

That is so true. I bet if there was a poll - and everyone being honest - i would dare say most purchases are exactly that. I am with in regards to mowers. I always bought all mowers new, except the two WAMS I run. Couldn't justify 50-60K for a mower. I bought ours a few years ago around 10-12K range. They produced $$. Sure one can say what about break downs etc but no matter which way you slice it - bottom line is what it is about at the end of the day, month, year. Big ticket items for me - like a new skid for example - that is a machine that is used all year for us, and I look at around 750 - 1000 hours / year. But for me to go out and by a new WAM cuz it is pretty looking and were only running 30 hours a week on a machine - that is like bying the new DINGO. Sure is going to generate X over 3 years but..............................

I never said anything about buying a new one:confused:. I'll most likely buy used and I never said I'll make 120k just because of the dingo. I said a chunk of that 120k will be because of the dingo and its increased productivity/lower costs on sod installs. I'm getting killed when I rent a full size and don't need the size 90% of the time. I can't find anyone that rents a dingo. One place rents a Bobcat MT55 but its less than $100 more for a full size one.

Finding a used 525 is a pipe dream... and if you do find one they will want 18k for it. And you did say The amount of 120k thats earned DIRECTLY because of the Dingo will also make it worth while.
But anyway, good luck finding a used mini skid. If you can keep an eye out for a month or two, you can find a great deal. I have seen boxer's go on ironplanet for 5-7k w/ very low hours. I have purchased a couple of mini skids for $3500 and resold them, so the deals are out there. You will never find a deal on a 525 though... there is too much demand for that model.

MRSOPS: - So far great. I got the advanced hand controls - that way all guys are able to switch over to what there comfortable with. I looked at the Cat, NH, Case, JD but bottom line was service, dealer and location. Therefore bringing my choices down to BC or NH. I clearly liked the BC better. If I had needed a bigger machine - joystick controls hands down. I ran a few of those on a few grading, backfilling jobs we had and loved them. Thing was I don't need that big of machine - kinda like a "want" not a need and opted for the S205. With the AHC's, bucket, 2 speed, high flow it listed for 37K. Only thing I wish I could do is increase responce time on the up/down/dump cycle, and maybe bend the arms a bit so when i go forward there not in the glass of the cab or as I have done already - knock out the little luvers on the vents cuz the sticks hit them at full speed forward. But so far - all we have used it on has been snow and with the said - it has been great for us.

nope i believe that is original paint i cant find any signs to tell me other wise, they are new decals the dealer put on for me because one had a big scuff on it. im going to buy either a bradco root rake ($5600) or a quick-attach eagle talon root rake ($4600). i have a very heavy duty set of loose forks off a big fork lift im gona have a fabshop build a heavy duty carriage to hold them. im also going to have a big scoop for planting trees made, in the future i am going to get a harley rake, a tree shear, tree grabbers, brush mower, land leveler, auger and bits, and a high capacity dirt bucket w/tooth bar.

that deere track machine looks hard to see out of.. hows the visability out of that machine i hate deeres door design
its got great visibility out of the front and the side but the rear visibility is very poor. i like the roll up door because i can get out of the cab even if the loader arms are up in the air in front of it. so far my only real gripe is that it doesn't have the 2spd, its a little slow tracking around but i will just have to work with it.

turf tiger has 1200hrs, 22hp kawai, new hydro pumps it didnt need them but i put them on it before they went at a bad time, i have the old ones if you want them. looks good runs great. has the high back seat and the advantage deck. it would look real good if you took about a day to wash wax and polish it. $4300
the walk behind has no hr meter, i didnt use it more the 50 hrs or so and the company i bought it from used it as a back up, hydros are strong and it starts on the first pull. it looks good and stripes great. $1200
i dont know if i will get pics today, i just got home from plowing and am headed to sleep.

so i have been dead set on buying a lightly used f-550 extended cab 4x4 with a mulch dump bed on it. now im starting to think that i need a bigger truck alot more then a one ton. that kodiak cant pull a darn thing!! im tired of loading my skid on a trailer to move it all ready so now i have seen the light. a roll off truck is next in line. im thinking a f-750 extended cab (it would be hard to find used so i may settle for a regular cab) with a roll off system and then i will put a air lift axle on it so i can haul a tad bit more. i believe i will want a cat engine and a automatic for sure and air brakes. thats the new truck im looking for.
im just not sure if a one ton is really worth it, they cant haul very much and get abused because people try to haul to much anyways. for the same price i can step up to a single axle truck and have a TRUCK not a pickup on steroids.

yes your right but a f-550 cant haul what a single axle with a air lift axle on it. i want a truck that i can load my skid up on it and maybe even a mini excavator at one time. or if thats over weight a skid on the truck and the a mini exc on a tag trailer behind.

Thanks for the info on the tracks I will contact him.
Anyways, I haven't heard of any issue on hoses or pumps, the only issue I have seen or known about is the lack of protection on the bottom of the machine, there are 2 drains 1 for fuel and 1 for hydro tanks there is a hole about 2 inch square with no protection, so a stick could punch a hole in the tank... hope this is not the case for you..... Also an FYI most of the lines are o ring sealed so if you do find the hose leaking I bet its a small o ring, pop the cab and take a look :) keep us informed,
David

no it was a BIG leak real fast. somthing blew and i hope a hose just rubbed threw
imjustdave
04-28-2008, 12:57 AM
You have to remember its like a bath tub in there, with very few holes on the bottom, so it would hold a few gallons before it spilled and about the time you run out of oil to move :) IF I remember right the tank is only 10 gallons and the pumps are doing about 24 for standard flow. smal leak turns into a mess quick :)
I have broken a few lines on the boom, and one for an attatchment... WOW by the time you turn it off there is a big mess.
Im sure your dealer will have it fixed in no time what ever it is, take some photos if you can, would love to know what it was.

well it turned out to be a blown hydro line. there is about 6'' of hard oil soaked red clay packed into the bottum of the machine that is a nightmare to get out. its so thick i cant even see where the line goes, i think it may go to the hydro cooler. i cant belive this machine doesnt have a big belly pan that can drop down.

a few pics of the latest lot clearing project i started today, you can see the water a little bit in the picture so you get the idea of how far out we have to go. the problem is its all a swamp about 15' into it and im really tired of geting the 332 stuck. im thinking about droping two guys off with a hd stihl whip with a saw blade a chain saw and tellin them to go at it and drag it all out to dry ground. or the second choice is to haul out a pc200 as back up when it gets stuck.

check out the fender.... i was loading it onto the trailer and when all the weight got onto the trailer and off the ramps it picked the back end of my dodge about 4' up into the air. i kept tracking up the trailer to transfer the weight back onto the truck when the machine came down it was above the fender as you can see. now i always throw a few 6x6's under the back of the trailer so it cant do that.

That sucks about the trailer fender. I learned the same lesson last year, loading my skid-steer onto the trailer on a steep driveway. As soon as the back tires got onto the trailer it took enough weight off the back of the truck that it started rolling down the driveway. Lucky for me it was fairly wide open and it came to a stop before hitting anything.
How do the tracks on your 332 hold up working in landclearing situations. I'm thinking about getting into land clearing as well, and always figured that all the jagged pieces of shredded trees sticking out would be hard on rubber tracks?

the tracks seem to hold up real good, as i go into the woods i like to keep everything behind me nice and clear so it doesnt hurt the tracks. a cat or even a asv i think would be better, a smaller light asv with the high ground clearence would work best but we all know how long the uc would last. im looking into getting steel tracks for it, that way i dont have to worry and just run all the crap over.

i do it with a chainsaw and then use the skid and grapple to haul the trees out. a feller buncher for the skid might be a good purchase if you really do alot of 4''-15'' trees. check over in the heavy equipment section for a thread titled landclearing pics for some "after" pics.

Even if they are trash hold on to them if your planning on plowing. A good ol' trash truck with a salter on it is better then screwing up one of your more "pretty" trucks. At my old job they still have the old 88 F350 parked in the back that comes out just to salt.

Dang boy, how much of a towing bill have you racked up over the last year?? It seems like you show us alot of "stuck" pics plus who knows how many stories you have decided to not show or share with us...?? Are you doing like half maintenence and landscaping/clearing? How many accounts you service. All your stuff looks nice, I love the colors on your trucks and trailer.

the 100% honest truth is i was day dreaming and drove right off a little cliff.
pay attention stupid. i didnt have a camera so i didnt take a picture. i have a few pics on my phone but dont have a cable to upload them.
i put the deere back on its feet using a 320 cat.
ive only had to pay twice out of all the times ive been stuck, first was 150 second was 225. the rest was lunch or a case of beer. im the kind of guy that ALWAYS will help some one thats stuck so i think its karma.

no that deal fell threw the interest rate was insane. i bought it with 20,000 miles on it so ist lighlty used but in very very good condition. to tell you the truth i rather woulda bought a single axle hook lift or two of those cube trucks over this pickup but the dodge started giving me problems and i just didnt want a truck to die when i was real busy. anyhow the chevy came up for sale and i always wanted a 2500hd regular cab so i figured it was a sign.

06-05-2009, 02:47 PM
Just turn up the tb's and get shock extenders, I did on my 08 and it's almost level and still have a good amount of play room in the keys. On the 07-08 you really don't have to get new keys to get it level because they have alittle more to play with then the previous. 285's fit with alittle trimming of plastic.

Dude go with Tuff Country EZ Ride 6" lift and some 35's. If your gonna lift it then lift it. Even leveling the front and some 33's you'll wanna go bigger in no time.
We just lifted my friends 09' Sierra 2500HD not too long ago took 2 days only.

did the same thing, leveled it and threw 33's on it, looks pretty dam good now.. Just keep an eye out for what rated tire you get, dont want the DOT writing a big ticket..
