Saturday, while fixing a leaking faucet, I picked up 2 steel rods at Lowes. The rods were regular steel, 4' by 3/16" diameter. I took the rods home, put them in the vice, bent the end 90 degrees 4" for the handle, wrapped it in tape, and then sharpened the opposite end to a point with the grinder.
Two trash pick up tools at under $3.00. ;)

If this is for picking up trash, like paper, then you can make one even cheaper. Using a broken broom handle, insert nail or screw into one end, grind to a point!

Kevin, I like putting a screw in the end. Does not work loose as fast as a nail. :)

I used a 20 penny tempered ring shank nail. Hasn't come loose in 2 years. They use 'em building pole barns etc.
You have to grind the head off with a grinder 'cause they're too tough to cut.

I will stick with the old bend over technique. I'll check back on my 50th birthday. lol
