The fireman in the photo did not get hurt. It was the Mexican stringing the lights that got lit up.

That's one of the many reasons I hate this time of year, there is always more and more people that get hurt or die for no other reason just for some extra holiday magic.

East Palo Alto started as an enclave of blue collar workers that tended to the needs of the wealthy in the communities of Palo Alto, Menlo Park and Atherton... it used to be mostly African Americans. These days there's more of a mix: Mexicans, Central Americans, Pacific Islanders and even a few Caucasians who find the housing affordable. Things have gotten better with more retail development and jobs, but it's still lower income, gangs, drug use and fairly high crime.

It's a shame that someone working to brighten up the neighborhood met his fate that way.

I know, he was a fellow serviceman putting up some lights. He died in the line of duty. Let's all take a moment of silence to remember him.
