Let me know about the 20 mpg...........I heard the new trucks get about 15-17 on the hwy.

My engine is still in break in, i will let you know on the highway mpg. My salesmen drives these trucks from MA to CT on a weekly basis, doing the dealer vehicle swap thing. He swears up & down they get 20? I will be thrilled if they do!!

I would really consider trading for one if it does. I still believe dodge is the only one that makes a 3/4 ton that can get 20. I just dont want another dodge.lol

I have 2,000 miles on my duramax and i get 19mpg highway doing 65-70. It will only go up from here..

I'm about to flip 5,000 miles on my new DMAX. Driving around I get 15's and 16's MPG. Highway I've gotten 18's and the readout has gotten as high as 22 MPG before I started pulling hills. I'm told by several people to wait until 10-15k miles. It will be fairly broken in then and there will be a significant mileage increase.

**NOTE

Local truck shop I go to that has everything from snow plows to custom fab work to diesel performance..........owner has a Megacab Dodge. He has aftermarket upgraded turbos, propane injection, torque converter and two programmers stacked on top of each other putting out about 1,500 torque.......he gets 23MPG.

I want to put a programmer on my truck to boost the mileage but I think I'm going to wait until about 15k miles and see where I am at before making the decision to do it or not..........for MPG reasons, not power......its got plenty.

Also, engine does smoke. Few times I've had it pouring white smoke at both idle and driving. Its rare but it happens.........you?

So far from me.. No smoke. Be careful with those programers. If the dealer finds out, your screwed

If it goes to the dealer it will be back to factory.....its a beautiful thing. I have a cousin with say an '04 3500 DMAX......Bully Dog chip getting 23mpg.

man do not put a chip on the new engines. you will hurt yourself. they will find it, and that will be bad news. these new trucks have plenty of power out of the gate. you dont need a chip. if your getting 20 hwy. id be thrilled with that. i can barely get 16 hwy...and i have a chip!

I can get around 20mpg highway, my 06 LBZ(different motor i know, you have the LMM) usually gets 18-20 unloaded on the highway.

What kind of milage do you get pulling? I am at 12.5 now. Before it was broke in I was at 9.

The smoke is from the EGR's (exhaust gas recirculation valves) it's a common problem but not a major, just watch what type of fuel you use, occasional off road diesel is recommended just to clear out the soot and carbon, but only a 1/4 tank and all highway driving to keep the EGT's up high enough to burn it off.

That's the reason these new diesels are being toted as "smokeless engines", the smoke gets re-burned through with the fresh air intake, very effective, also watch how much time you spend idling, if the EGT's get too cool (below 200 degrees) for too long, that will make the EGR stick a little giving you the smoke from take off.

I always had the same EGR problems on my Powerstroke, but I put a 3 way monitor from BD Performance on it to measure the EGT, Turbo Boost and Trans temp and I was amazed at the temp. differences in the 4 seasons, it's really neat to watch it climb as high as 1100 before the computer pulls back on the engine.

You all could increase mpg by switching to Amsoil, have a cleaner engine that runs cooler and starts easier in winter. Run 25,000 miles (15,000 severe duty) on 1 oil change. Your engine does not need to "break in" before you switch to synthetic oil.

This new engine has a ceramic particle filter, when it gets full the computer sends you a message. To clean it you get on the highway for 20 minutes. I was also told that they froze this engine in liquid nitrogen during testing and started it in an effort to make the head gasket fail, they claim they couldnt get it to fail?

Here is a diesel additive that i use on every tank.

http://www.stanadyne.com/new/ppt/ppt_dfa.asp

It is really cheap. I think i pay $3.50/bottle and that bottle treats 60gallons. It noticably boost my power and i tracked my milage and i went from 12.5mpg to right around 14mpg on my 3500 duramax. But it only has a few thousand miles on it, so it is still not broken in just yet. I expect for those numbers to be in the 16mpg to 18mpg range later. BTW, tht 14mpg is mixed city and hwy. Highway is probally around 16mpg right now.

Also, here is a great forum if you want to learn a lot about duramax motors.

www.dieselplace.com

have fun. I love my Duramax.

The main thing to watch with the new LMM Duramax is your fuel quality. I've heard a lot of problems with plugged fuel filters causing the trucks to go into limp mode. Also, with the DPF, fuel additives and chips aren't really recommended either. A mild tune seems to be ok, but some of the guys using bigger tunes are running into problems more often. Check out www.dieselplace.com though. There are lots of people of there with tons of information on the GM trucks and Duramax engine.

The Stanadyne additive that i recommended is actually approved by several OEM's including GM. It is a great additive and you would be crazy not to use it for $1.50 per tank. Heck, that's only 5 cents per gallon.

I have no intentions of adding chips, this is a work truck/personal vehicle, i did not buy it to race. If your powerstroke or cummins blows it away in a race, thats great, have a nice day! I have fuel in my shop, i purchased the tank brand new, i only buy from my friend, he brings pure, clean, road fuel directly from the terminal in his oil truck. The only thing i add is power service. The only rigs that go near that tank are the kubota the NPR and the duramax.

Im going to bite my tongue, and say my 1965 dodge coronet (3 on the tree) was a great ride! Unfortunatley, all my chrysler/dodge/plymouth/ since have been very bad! Great engines all around, piss poor everything else, from electrical to tranny. JMHO!!

Pro Touch, what is wrong with the Torsion Bar front suspension, from what I hear its a big improvement over my front end on my 05 Bowtie 4X4 Duramax.

I did not like the nose on the 08 chevy 3500 on paper at all. After actually seeing it up close my opinion has changed! I was not big on my grey steele wheels either, they are now growing on me. Overall im really pleased with the truck.

I like the grill trim & foglights on the gmc, however i like the headlights and huge chrome bumper on the chevy. The chevy nose just says serious truck. I know what you mean though, the new chevy nose is love it or hate it, no in between. The gmc nose still reminds me of an suv, i have an 02 tahoe lt and i really like the nose!
