Product Spotlight: Irrigander™ 8 Irrigation Expander

The Irrigander 8 expander is an 8 zone irrigation expander designed to expand medium size systems that have enough outputs available on the irrigation controller to drive the additional zones. The Irrigander 8 expander encodes additional channels on the already installed field wiring. This allows the Irrigander 8 expander to control up to 5 additional irrigation valves using just 4 existing field wires.

The Irrigander 8 expander is comprised of two modules: an Encoder that is installed close to or inside the sprinkler controller; a Decoder that is installed close to the valves to be controlled. The Encoder is the module with the green label:

Both the Encoder and the Decoder are designed for high reliability and are built using the highest quality commercial components to provide long, trouble-free operation. The Encoder printed circuit board is shown below with the different parts of the circuitry highlighted:

The Decoder printed circuit board is encapsulated using an industrial electronic encapsulant material to protect the circuitry from the elements, especially water. The interior of the Decoder is shown below before and after encapsulation:

Installation of the Irrigander 8 expander is simple. The 4 field control wires attached to the irrigation controller's output controlling the valves to be expanded are disconnected and connected to the 4 outputs on the Irrigander 8 expander's Encoder. The 8 inputs to the Encoder are connected to any available 8 irrigation controller outputs. The 4 field wires are then connected to the Decoder and the outputs from the decoder are connected to the original valves plus additional valves up to a total of 8 valves (see the attached installation diagram).

Each output from the Decoder can drive up to 1 amp. This is sufficient power to drive 1-2 valves per zone depending on the specific valve used. The Irrigander 8 expander requires 24 VAC which is supplied by the irrigation controller.
